Shaolin Fist Of Death
From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.
We’ve been entertaining the thought of moving back to the Pacific Northwest for quite some time now, probably 4 years. We actually almost did it two years ago, but the Big Plan fell through.
In any case, I’ve been batting around the idea of opening a semi-public recording/mixing facility once we get there. It’ll be Nuendo-based, and have a mini API console as the centerpiece. I’ve got the whole thing laid out in my head. All I need is a hundred grand. No problems, right? The thing is that it is physically impossible to make money with a one- or two-room facility these days, when all that facility does is record bands. With a facility like this, that wouldn’t be the case, as the great majority of the available time would be taken up by myself, with my own production and remix projects. I’m just saying that it will have the _ability_ to take on external clients, something I can’t really do right now. (Mainly because the Accelerator, my current studio, has no room for anyone to sit down besides me, it’s so stuffed with keyboards.)
So the goal, such as it stands, is thus: a free-standing double-walled building with a small live room and a largish control room. API 7xxx and 8xxx rack modules to make up the console, an API 2500 for the two-mix compression duties, and Apogee all around for conversion. I’m going to go down to three synths, in the interests of space. My plans include bumping up my current Blacet modular by 3 rack spaces, getting a MiniMoog Voyager, and a MemoryMoog (with Lintronics mod). This will cover modular, monosynth, and polysynth duties. The rest can be done with plugs. I have some various ideas about outboard, but that’s another entry.
Unfortunately, all I have so far out of that list above is Nuendo and the Blacet. That, and the name of the studio. It’ll be called Shaolin Fist Of Death.
