Four Measures Of Fury - April

From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.

Thanks for the 20-odd emails I got pointing out that last Saturday was the first Saturday in April. ;-)

Here is your loop. It is 120 bpm (and the masses breathed a sigh of relief), and the Minimoog bass is a big fat C. As always, your loop should be exactly the same length and root key as the original. There’s a lot of wiggle room in this one, and with the tempo being what it is, some more experimentation is possible than in FMOFs previous.

If you’re not familiar with the Analog Industries FMOF project, here’s the deal: download the loop, and proceed to reorganize/edit/destroy it to taste, then either post a link to your new version in this thread (or FMOF threads that follow it) or mail it to me. If you choose to mail it to me, _please_ zip it up. You can send me any format that Nuendo can import, which is any format, pretty much. I assemble all the submissions in to one long track, in the order they are received.

Now, the bad news. Normally, you’d have a week to do this, but I’m going to L.A. on Thursday morning for a well-deserved weekend of relaxation with my lovely and long-suffering wife, so FMOF submissions for this month must be received no later than Wednesday, 8:00pm Pacific (GMT +9). Sorry about that, but if I let it cruise the whole weekend, I’ll end up having to download a shitload of wav files over some asserific hotel connection on to my poor little iBook, which won’t be fun for me or you. Plus, like, I have shit to do that doesn’t involve sitting in front of a computer.

So, Wednesday afternoon. Rock it!

well... uh, based on the first two, i gather dynamics are passé? both seem a bit overcompressed, gets irratating real fast. That said, both are excellent, just maybe lay off on the L2, eh?

true, but the main reason i point this out is that i thought all these get put together in the end, so squishing for creative's sake is cool..but it should all get the final treatment together. Well, that said really only the 2nd one grated on me, and if it's not recurring/repeating, no prob, it's the repitition that would irratate.. ok, i should shut up and do my own with my own peak blasiting codes. agian i do like the contributions, they just lack some dynamics. And i just got an RME Fireface 800 so i'm extra sensitive as I test it out.

wade, loud just becomes Welk after awhile(lawrence that is) like the latest ministry Rio grande... it gets old and tired fast, check out some Merzbow, Kevin Drumm, or Daniel Menche, hell, even whitehouse, they all get extreme but also recognize the importance of dynamics to have the effect they want... but if you're making pop muzak..never mind, by all means don't bother.

I can't possibly be the first one done, can I? Aaahhh....the sweet smell of working in my pajamas. Enjoy!

Its funny how much I enjoy working within such a small space of time, from now on all my songs will be under 8 seconds long ! :)

Normally, I'm militantly opposed to the severe modern square wave called music, but in a case like this, whacking the file pretty hard is handy, from the perspective of someone that has to put them all together.

    So squish away.

I just checked and calculated mine up - there's a whole 20.8 db of RMS variation in those 8 seconds. That's positively classical these days, so I'm unrepentant!
Perhaps now is the time to mention I did it soley on headphones too,
    heh heh .
    eat that fireface!

this is a little less compressed. oh good lord, i'm kidding. nothing but AD.

i get it, i still tend to squish the hell out of anything with a beat. i'd almost go as far as saying dynamics have become a "matter of taste.'

You'll notice that while I spend a lot of time pissing and moaning about people's gear and studios on this site, I rarely talk shit about someone's music. Mainly, this is because taste in music is subjective. For instance, I think that the simple fact that TheTwlo likes Merzbow is reason enough to discount anything he says, because I personally find Merzbow to be unlistenable, and have to mentally question anyone that could possibly use that as a metaphor for the word "dynamics."

However, I don't do that, because my opinion is based upon my own tastes, and not quantifiable fact (like "Mackies mixers blow.") If you don't personally know the guy you're dissing, I'd suggest using the private message feature of the site. And if you do personally know him/her, you can do it over the phone or something.

So, long story short, if you have a problem with the dynamics or whatever of a particular piece of output that is provided in these threads, I'd strongly suggest keeping it to yourself.

Speaking of subjectivity, I would love to hear what TheTwio's best guessus are as to what gear people are using, since he seems to have such finely honed listening ears. Just a friendly challenge,

    Mike

  15. Angstrom

I don't know Twio, but I find his eagerness to press his opinions on my 4 bars of messing about frankly a little ... er, odd?

some info for those wanting to re-create such a controversial sound
    drums 1:11
    organ 1:11
    bassline 10:1
    overall yep, L2 of -3.5db

    happy squashing kids!

I considered carping about dynamics some more, looked like fun.

    Instead here's my entry:

The original loop isn't so different from the first one, excluding the extra awfulness in that one. Same folk who made it?

Opinions are like assholes-everyone has one...
Love this 4 measures of fury-having great gear is good, but having good ideas is great!

I've been meaning to submit on one of these since you first listed it but it's taken me this long to get round to it.

    Good fun though!

i know, this is dead, and i was drunk when i posted.. and it all came out somewhat wrong. Sorry Wade and Chris.
I don't know, and it's hard to judge on such a small snippet, but hell, i was dumab and did, sorry. The new Ministry, that is unlistenable.

Merzbow, well, he does soooo much it's hit and miss, but there is crap and some amazing pieces, try Amlux.

sorry flaming or whatever, but i really did like all the contributions quite a bit.
