Hard-Core Gear Porn Friday...

From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.

I recall making a comment some months ago that I didn’t trust nice clean studios, because it looks like nothing gets done there. By that yardstick, Dana Countryman is one of the busiest guys in the music industry. Take a brief jaunt through his studio, home of a fairly large (not Scot Solida large, but large) .Com synth and an Ondioline, as well as a lot of what Phillip K. Dick would call “kibble.”

Also, we have a special bonus Gear Porn today. Adamjay finally sent me a picture of his rack. Adamjay runs a mobil recording service. Adam, you can mobile that 500 rack right to my studio. And the Phoenix mic pres. And…

Bonus round two: Suit & Tie Guy found a _really_ old Moog modular in a local college’s recital room. Check this shit out. Fucking perfboard. Seriously.

Wow, that Dana sure likes his cartoon fonts.

I'd only seen bits and pieces of Adamjay's rack before that he'd posted on forums, impressive in its entirety.

If it's a mobile studio, is that whole rack completely portable, or do only bits and pieces go out on the road?

the two black 4 space rack bags at the top left + the ULN-2 (under the digi 002) are the mobile elements of my rig.

The rest of it stays in the studio for mixes.

I also bring a Swissonic AD96 A/D conveter for larger track projects. In all, the system is capable of capturing 22 tracks at 24bit/96khz. Its also capable of sending a total of 12 unique stereo headphone mixes, or 24 unique mono headphone mixes (big bands and orchestras)

a gear list including microphone collection can be found at www.boldrecording.com

no. that was my dinner i had at the local vietnamese restaraunt afterwards. (it's not anywhere near as good as Pho Grand in St Louis though.)

Nice slutty bonus. Wonder how that DRS-Q4 sounds...

The DRS-Q4 sounds so smooth. the EQ really is the perfect compliment to the DRS preamps. I have to be careful with it, it allows me to safely get by with poor mic selection. I haven't yet found a mic that doesn't take the DRS-Q4 EQ well.

11 selectable frequencies over 4 bands.
    here's a closer pic: http://www.boldrecording.com/adamjay/drsq4/DRS_Q4_2.jpg

I've been using it on the drum bus. through the mic inputs with the pad engaged and gain at lowest setting. I didn't anticipate being able to use it during mixes but its working out incredibly well so far.
