New ribbon mic from Peluso
From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.

I’ve been seeing generally good things about Peluso microphones. They make a more or less complete range of mid-priced studio mics, and they’ve just added a ribbon to the family, the R14. $694 gets you a mic that apparently compares favorably to both an AEA R84 and a Royer 121, even though both of those mics are more expensive. Anyways, go have a look.

there's a good bit of dirt about John Peluso.
you could search all the major recording forums and find out, but this one particularly sticks out:

Woa! That was awesome! I always think its interesting to hear behind the scenese dirt about the people who make our gear.
That's a damned shame. I thought it looked like a good product at a reasonable price. However, Fletcher (aside from being a world-class asshole, a subject on which I know of whence I speak) knows what the fuck he's talking about. I'd take anything he said about a piece of gear or manufacturer to the bank.

Yea, love him or hate him, Fletcher stands by what he says. And he'll sign his name after every statement made.
He doesn't throw stones unless the target deserves a stoning.
I was looking at a pair of Peluso SDC's for a minute, and in my research i found all that shadyness.
mmm hmm.
it seems like whenever there's bile being splashed around in the interweb/usenet kiddie pool, fletcher is somehow in the middle of it... pissing his speedos and flailing his water wings.
if only fletcher was a little bit older... he could have warned us all that georg neumann was a nazi.
Having spent the better part of 4 solid years in a studio Fletcher built in Chicago, I can say beyond any shadow of a doubt that, love him or hate him, he knows what he's doing.

Yeah. I'm afraid I have to side with Mr. Toft on that whole issue. PMI seems to bring quality shit at a reasonable price to the table, while the whole Oram empire is a bunch of snippy, snarky people making catch-as-catch-can products.
Mainly, the PMI companies have better websites.
In any case, don't get me wrong. I have an ax to grind with Mercenary right now. I still haven't got my Chandler Germanium. I am _so_ close to cancelling the order and getting one of the 500-series racks from Atlas Pro Audio. ($100 off if you buy an OSA pre.) I can't even tell you. I really want the Chandler, but I also really want to do some recording, and the pres in this 896 are getting me down. If I had a couple hundred more dollars, I'd just get the OSA rack and pre anyhow, but I'm not real flush right now.

d'oh yeah, meant PMI/Oram
I've used both of their products and dont particularly like either of them, to be honest. So I could care less about the debate, to be honest. Give me John Hardy or Speck gear over either of those guys.
CR- Have you tried calling around to see if anyone else has a germanium in stock, rather than waiting for Mercenary?
Oh, apparently Germanium EQ and Comp on the way too.
holla!
The problem is that I ordered the Germanium when they were still under a grand. Now they're $1200 or so. So if I cancel the order then get it somewhere else (Atlas has them in stock) then I'll have to pony up another $250.
Patience.

Seconding CR's comments on Fletcher. The poitics in the pro-audio gear scene are quite interesting. Violet/Blue, PMI/Toft, now this.
eeeenteresting
you mean PMI/Trident ?
Or PMI/Oram, more to the point...

or PMI/Douchebag
lol
i wonder if Mercenary is just waiting to see if you'll cancel, so they don't have to sell at the old (much lower) price.
speculating, of course. but it does seem an eerie coincidence.
I spent some time on the phone with them today, and they have 10 days. As soon as those 10 days are up, I'm cancelling, and ordering an OSA rack from Atlas. Mercenary has already lost my business for the Lynx AES card and Big Ben I'm about to buy, so they might want to seriously consider better communication skills if they want to keep my boutique dollar.

Interesting info here on Toft vs. Oram. Their new desks were both in the running for a future replacement for my Soundtracs. Guess I need to spend more time on recording/PSWrec/Gearslutz & catch up with the drama...
You're better off not. Simple summary:
The Toft console is robot-made in China. However, it has more features, and will actually exist on this temporal plane at some point in quantities that mean you'll be able to own one. Also, Malcom Toft is a pretty nice guy for a thief.
The Oram/"Trident" console is essentially the same thing minus some features. It is hand-made in England, but there will only be like 6 of them ever, and 5 will almost certainly self-destruct. Who knows? You could be that lucky sixth! Also, John Oram is a pretty nice guy for a crook.
The above is the summary of my reading on the subject, and doesn't reflect my opinion one way or the other. I vastly prefer hand-made gear to Chinese Robot Gear, but I also vastly prefer that my shit work all the time. 6:5 and pick 'em. It is a tough call, no doubt about it.

Okay, so I fucking gave up. I couldn't stand it any more. (I'm not, as you've no doubt gathered, the most patient motherfucker on the planet.) I cancelled the Germanium order from Mercenary, and ordered a 312C single channel from Brent Averill.

That pre has been an object of my desire for several years now. I'll get the Chandler eventually, but next up is a 1272 from Averill.

Hopefully that fixed your recording blues. Definately feel you on the MOTU pre front, most of the people I know use the them and I must say I prefer using even my soundtracs pre's piped into my RME. Not even close to botique.
And if Oram & Toft are both that shady (knew about the China 'craftsmanship') then I guess it's back to looking at early 80's and late 70's consoles again. M4 is just not something I think I want to do the upkeep on, and a Verona or that Chandler goodie you featured today are both a bit out of my pricerange.
Track down a Studer 169. Best bang for the buck out there, bar none.
