Synth Mangler!

Oh, this looks like good fun, and I even like the color. What it is: if I’m reading the material right, basically you have two heavy-duty fuzz boxes, and the joystick lets you cross-fade between them. http://www.effector13.com/pedals/synthmangler/index.html>Here’s the site. Don’t break anything.

jesus- this thing sounds like powertools or someone cuting concrete w/a circular saw or perhaps a dentist's drill or some crazy woodworking grinder or something.. wtf.

i have two Soda Meiser pedals and not only are they the most fun fuzz pedals ever made (so fin in fact it has me playing guitar again for the first time in years), they also work great with my Blacet modular. This box is going to be great.

cant see the video from this here linux box, but I do wonder what the hell they wanted to say with the japanese characters. The top line says "raikana" and the bottom I can only make out the first two characters "powa" but it aint the way one kana-izes "power". Fer as much as people whinge about engrish, slapping up a few random japanese characters looks just as dumb from this side of the pacific.

    Hey Downpressor :

Ha ha! Those aren't even Japanese characters... if you look closely it's "synth mangler" in a different font, but shoved off to the side to add balance to the picture.

... but seroiusly, thanks for concentrating on what's important.

Devi: what? Its just a conincidence that what you see is a western font and what I see is a Japanese font?

  9. Chris Randall

Heh. It's one of those fonts that looks kana, but are actually English letters. Turn your head to the right. The "synth" part is obvious, the "mangler" less so.

ok this is weirding me out! I've been living in japan too long because all I see are fully formed katakana tilting my head to the right. The first line is "ra" "i" "ka" "na" and the first character of the second line is clearly "po"

  11. Chris Randall

Trust me on this. I have that font. (Is it an old Chank font? I forget. Maybe T26.) The characters are western ones that have been slightly altered to look like similar kana. The top line of "ra" is the top horizontal line of the "s" in "synt" (which is all you can see in the image.) The "na" character is "t" in "synt."

Now, that is officially all the thought cycles I'm gonna expend on this subject! If you're used to looking at katakana, you are, of course, gonna see katakana. If, on the other hand, you never look at katakana, you're gonna see Western characters whether you want to or not.

excellent stuff, i have a super early version Krackle Fuzz, and think I originally suggested to Devi to add the feedback loops!
great unique designs, happy it's made it this far.

Chris, thanks for spelling it out. Now I see it.

They should call it The Abu Ghraib.
i'm not with the whole metasonixesque B&D approach.

    Penzoil,

Don't you know? It is all edgy. EDGY!! The kids want edgy!

I don't want to disagree with your detective work, neilium et al, but I think this is actually pretty interesting. Guitar pedals are usually quite tame and tend to follow a rather strict set of boundries. i.e. a fuzz pedal is generally judged on how much it sounds like a Fuzz Face, and a top boost is judged by how similar it is to a Dallas Rangemaster.

I'm of the considered opinion that E13 is to guitar pedals as AD is to plugins, FWIW. He makes zany, new shit, and isn't afraid to try out odd things. I like 'em.

    Chris,

I agree; the "get as close as possible to what Hendrix/Page/Beck used" paradigm in guitar gear has to be kicked to the curb. According to the player mags, guitar playing is an activity akin to Civil war re-enactment.

That being said, the audio samples of the Synth Mangler left me nonplussed, especially considering the price. If you want something that sounds f-d up, f- something up. Get a screwdriver and a couple pawnshop pedals and go to town. Why watch porno when you can make some for less cash?

  19. Chris Randall

Snort. That's a good metaphor, that Civil War thing. I'm going to use that in the future.

I was hanging out at a studio with a producer friend of mine once, and the lead singer of the project he was producing was talking about flying in a guitar player to play on a couple tracks. The producer goes "import a guitar player to Chicago? Fuck! I'd pay a bunch just to leave this town." For some reason, that made me think of that. Don't know why.

But back on tack, any time I try to make an effect that isn't on General Guitar Gadgets, I end up with something that makes, like, brassy farts. This was fun once. About the fifth time it becomes tedious.
