I know this band is sooooo last week and all, but you gotta hand it to 'em for this performance. I mean, if there's a Cool Event Horizon, beyond which you can't get any cooler, they reached it. (Via [Der Matrix](http://matrixsynth.blogspot.com/2006/09/2006-mtv-movie-awards-gnarls-barkley.html).)

**ecallender** (2006-09-11):

True. They may have scored in the 99 percentile of cool, but this post just won't get as many comments as an average phukktardo. Say, isn't Lucasfilm gonna sue?

**AdamJay** (2006-09-11):

but can the wookie play a BREAKbeat????

**Chris Randall** (2006-09-11):

The only post that has ever got more comments than an average Fucktard post is the one last Sunday where we asked what people might want to see in a new AD plugin. (137-odd comments on that, when all was said and done.)

I also get about 30% more traffic in general on days that I put up a Fucktard post. Since I don't actually make any money off this site (I give the ads out free to companies that are cool, for no consideration) this figure is meaningless to me, of course. I could really care less which posts draw more attention, but suffice to say that it's interesting that people mostly come out of the woodwork to either agree or disagree that someone is an idiot, but they don't want to talk about gear so much.

This is, of course, fine, because there's no way I could compete with a site like Gearslutz for gear talk, or MatrixSynth for just posting about synths. So, if there has to be a clearinghouse for the detritus of the music industry, it might as well be here.

I'm certainly open to thoughts on how to monetize this site. Since it gets so much traffic, there must be a way to turn that in to gear. (I don't really need actual money. I'm happy with gear.) I'm open to ideas in that regard. I'm done with Google Ads; they're just stupid and they demean the site. (More than a Diamond Dave post? I think so.)

**aKido** (2006-09-11):

Chewie the drummer is actually an ex-NIN. It's Chris Vrenna.

**blinkman** (2006-09-11):

I dig what these guys do, the stage production is super cool, Chris and Clint (stormtrooper on guitar) are pals of mine, and they all get big props for going the distance with the SW costumes (it can't be easy to play in those things).

That said...

Is it just me, or is this performance totally NOT grooving? It sounds like half of the people on stage are getting the click about 80ms late...or something.

Not trying to be a hater or anything...just wondering if anyone else noticed this. Maybe I'm crazy. (sorry.)

**Wade Alin** (2006-09-11):

yeah, it's all sorts of off, groovewise.

**RexRhino** (2006-09-11):

So why did they stop making Motown music again? Cause everyone loves Motown... even cheap Motown-like rip-off songs like this totally rock!

**giantm** (2006-09-11):

De ja vu! I never thought of rebel force pilots as back-up singers from the previous post. But, as usual, Chewy on drums. I'd like to see Chewy pull a Dave Grohl and put out a solo album.

**Chris Randall** (2006-09-11):

He did:

And to RexRhino, you are, I hope, familiar with Jamie Lidell? By far the best of the various nu-soul artists. He's on Warp, and his shit is available at Bleep. The main reason I can't get behind Gnarls Barkley is that they kind of seem a little late to the game, and they're not near as good.

Plus that Violent Femmes cover just rubs me the wrong way.

Eh, nu-soul {seriously?} has its place, but we'd be remiss to ignore the Real Thing, recorded even now. NYC's Truth and Soul label have been releasing newly recorded 45s and CDs that sound like they were unearthed from a vault after thirty-five years:

Similarly, I'd think the Daktaris' _Soul Explosion_ was the latest in the Ethiopiques series of Afro-Funk and Soul if I didn't have the reissue's liner notes to indicate otherwise {it was originally released in 1998, and I wish I'd been aware of it then}:

**bleen** (2006-09-11):

somehow, i've completely managed to read all about this "gnarls barkley" danger mouse/cee-lo thing and until watching this video, had yet to hear it. interesting stuff.

i love chris vrenna's 'tweaker' discs, but he's not grooving too well here (i blame the wookie rug...).

i wanna hear reggie from maktub singing this track - he'd stomp on it, mash it around, kill it a little, and then make it dance all over again.

**Chris Randall** (2006-09-11):

Yup. I'm in the same boat as you. I'd managed to not hear GB until the MTV Movie Awards. They were on Letterman not too long ago, and I was going to catch up then, but I fell asleep.

But, by the same token, anyone expecting outstanding musicianship on an MTV awards show stage is in for a rough ride.

jamie lidell is the shit...

he is on a US tour in the fall...pity no one ever comes to the vapid cultural wasteland that is south florida

**musicmachinemaker** (2006-09-12):

I'm not sure if it is chris vrenna on drums. When i saw them at Conan Obrien , which was all dressed in bathropes he actually played a different beat. And i've seen several footage of another guy playing.
Besides chris is small and this wookie is bigger it seems....

the conan session with a different vibe
and:

on letterman with another aproach

both with chris

**Wade Alin** (2006-09-12):

i'm feelin the letterman version. all trendyness aside - it's a very well written song.

**penzoil washington** (2006-09-12):

motown songs had actual choruses and bridges. nu r&b choruses tend to just drone on the same chords as the rest of the song. 4 chords, 1 per bar, spinning round and round and round.........

**Chris Randall** (2006-09-12):

That wookie does look a bit large to be the Pod, now that you mention it. But it's definitely him. I've known Chris for 15 years, and can see his drumming a mile away/

-CR

**Trancetones** (2006-09-12):

Choruses are the new verses and bridges. Seems to me a lot of new stuff likes to jump right to the money shot. No foreplay, attention spans are too short.

**Muller** (2006-09-12):

I do like the fact that they change up the arrangement of this song for the different appearances. It actually make it listenable.

**uvacom** (2006-09-12):

Everyone looks bigger in a wookie suit.

**antix2** (2006-09-12):

... especially Chris V.
