WTB 606...

From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.

Okay, I’m looking for a pair of TR-606s. If you have one to sell, drop me a line and let me know about it, or if you know of one not on the ’bay. Cosmetic issues aren’t important, but they need to be in full working order.

That's what the new AD plug in is going to be isn't it?
I hope so, I've always wanted a 606. I'd imagine this will be the next best thing :)

Since there isn't anything in the way of tone controls on the 606, would you gain much having the real thing versus just using samples?

    a fun sequencer?

The real thing gives you the fun sequencer (as dm said), the simplistic joy of a little box with knobs and blinky lights that makes noises, and the ineffable qualities of analog sound generation which cannot be captured and recreated with sampling.

Mostly I want one because I'm an old Skinny Puppy fan.

Yeah, we just decided we both wanted one. Nothing nefarious. Other than the fact that Adam has about ten times the shit I do, we tend to buy the same gear.

ya ever tried to use one of those monsters in song mode... ick!

  7. Chris Randall

    There's a song mode?

    (Sarcasm.)

ah, adam, you're bringing me back to the intro of "rodent" on rabies, one of the puppy's finer 606 moments. :)

nothing like a 606 and a midi modded Boss DR-110 through a few Guitar Pedals.

oooooh, to be 16 years old and in love....

The real question is why we have to purchase 20 year old equipment to get functionality that could probably be manufactured for slightly less than a boss guitar pedal?

But as for the sequencer, the sequencer on a TR-707 is a bit nicer than the TR-606... and with MIDI out, you can control a synth or sampler or whatever you want.

Did you ever build an x0x box, you mentioned them some time ago.

I wanted a 606 soooooo baaaaad when I was 16. Couldn't afford it, though. I built a PAiA percussion tone generator, connected it to the joystick port of my Apple ][, and wrote a program in BASIC to sequence drum patterns. It was all rather horrible but it did work.

RexRhino: I've never completely understood why Roland doesn't reissue some of their famous boxes, but I suspect that it's partly because of the cost of manufacturing. A 606 would most definitely not be cheaper than a Boss pedal. The old TR boxes (at least everything older than the 707) had a lot of discrete analog components; they were complicated products with complicated production cycles. Today's surface-mount assembly machines literally can't make a TR-606, so they'd have to redesign the thing from scratch to reissue it. In the end they'd probably have to sell it for at least as much as its original price, if not more, adjusting for inflation.

I used to have a 707 and yes, its sequencer is better (and it has that nifty LCD) and yes it has MIDI out. But these considerations are beside the point. I just want a 606 for no logical reason, kind of like how my 14-year-old neighbor wants a new iPod.

monofever: no, I never built a x0xbox (and neither did Chris). I've never been a huge 303 fan so I decided I wasn't interested in investing the time to build a clone. (Yes, I understand the significance of the 303 in recent music history and yes, there are many, many songs that I like which have a 303 in them. I just don't feel a need for one myself.) So instead I launched into designing and building a hardware sequencer from scratch, which is how I amuse myself during my Copious Free Time. (Yes, this project moves at a very slow pace.)

Building your own hardware sequencer. Man that's cool.

Me I take the cowards way out. I just hook a notron up to a drm-1 mkII.

  16. studio nebula

    If I had a Notron I probably wouldn't be building a sequencer. :-)

I'm finishing the layout for the second set of PC boards tonight, coincidentally. I might have something worth photographing and posting by... um... December, maybe?
