Well, as it happens, I'm _not_ going to NAMM. We got about 200 miles from home, and ran in to Issues with the Highway. Apparently, some people feel that a [light dusting of snow](http://www.mailtribune.com/update/update.html#snowrestrictions) is a good reason to close I-5. After sitting unmoving on the highway breathing truck exhaust for two hours, we gave up and turned around.

So, instead of my NAMM report on Thursday, you'll get my Snowboarding Report.

favorite quote...
"1 to 3 inches of the white stuff could pile up"

**Chris Randall** (2007-01-16):

Yeah. Too bad it was off base by about 6 inches. They were letting semis over Rice Pass one at a time, and only if they had chains on, and one still managed to overturn.

Any chance you could get on the 97? That'd take you to the 5 somewhere around Weed, CA.

Of course, it may be closed too. :|

It is. And I can't get there without crossing the Cascades, which are getting hammered right now. I know this because I live in them. But fuck that. We just sat in a car for 7 hours and only made it 147 miles from home. I'm done with this shit.

This sucks big time. But since I won't be snowboarding this year, I'm looking forward to your sb report ;-)

**Scodiddly** (2007-01-16):

Yeah, let's see the snowboarding report!

Actually I was somewhat amused by your snowboarding mention over on that other blog. I learned how to ride just a few years ago, I guess around age 36 or so. First day I took lessons, second day I recovered. Third day I went out on my own, fourth day I recovered. Fifth day I had fun! And it's been more fun that skiing ever since. Snowboards are all about balance, that's basically all you have to work with. Much more interesting than being on skis.

**Chris Randall** (2007-01-16):

I'll tell you what. I didn't realize how easy it was to ski until I tried snowboarding. I'm getting better, though. I bought a pretty nice rig (on the high end of the intermediate scale) so I'll have something to grow in to.

Makes you long for sweet home Chicago, the city where they shrug off a foot and a half of snow, and fistfights break out if you move someones chair from the parking spot they dug out....

**Jeff C** (2007-01-16):

I've only tried snowboarding once, at Big Bear. First day sucked: Took lessons, which was fine, but the slopes were overly crowded and my snowboard mastery was more or less null.

Skipped a day - too many bruises, aches and pains.

Went back on a weekday. Slopes were pretty much empty. Unfortunately, I didn't get much beyond the "point the board downhill and go at unsafe speeds until you remember how to stop" phase.

Is doh spelled doh or d'oh?

**Chris Randall** (2007-01-16):

That's a perfectly valid question, but unfortunately, my brain would melt if I actually applied any thought process to it.

If anyone is curious, here's where I go: http://www.hoodoo.com/Default.htm

Just about 45 minutes from my house. (It'd be quicker if there was a highway there, but it's just two-lane mountain roads, and I invariably get stuck behind some blue-hair going 25, and there's nowhere to pass.)

I used to telemark (back when I still had a spine composed of separate vertebrae). It was at little resort that is so old-school that it's banned snow-boards. It was about 30 minutes from my house. It was a place in Utah called Alta. Good times.

**D' MacKinnon** (2007-01-17):

I ski and snowboard, my father still loathes that I switched to snowboarding after all those years of ski trips as a kid. I could pretty much tackle anything on skis but I get more enjoyment out of snowboarding. Moguls are a bitch and I found my limit this season when I tried to do some deep powder back bowl boarding. I think if I had skied I would have been okay but boarding through it I kept getting stuck in waist deep snow whenever my front end sank too much.

This winter I've seen more snow in Colorado than I have since I've been here but on the plus side the boarding is good.

Bogus, I was looking forward to meeting you in person.
