This is an open thread, as I'm a bit busy today. I'll post something meaningful when I get back this evening. To get the ball rolling, I need to buy some new electronic music. What's out there in the underground that I haven't heard of yet? Parameters:

1\. No fucking trance.

2\. Good production is a must. While I'm not a fan of BT's normal output (no offense; I just don't care for it) I \_do\_ like "Madskillz - Mic Chekka." I really admire the time he put in to the production of that track. Stuff like that.

3\. I guess it's just those two.

**micester** (2007-01-22):

I would suggest amon tobin ,zea(i think its electronic) , punish yourself , ooah ,chachi jones ,yoko solo ,deadelus ,edit ,the wretch ,tycho ,we used to be cool and thats all i can think of now

**hbemusic** (2007-01-22):

Alright so this is going to be a total shameless plug, but I just got finished producing an ep with a hip-hop guy named LT and it is right in the vein of "Madskillz" electronic/rap stuff. It's on iTunes here (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=195691987&s=143441) and eMusic here (http://www.emusic.com/album/10958/10958608.html), courtesy of tunecore (which is actually pretty cool - I remember you asking about it before, and so far, i like it).

Anyway, I hope you forgive the plug, but I do think you'd enjoy it if you like that bt track. I'm not sure what other types of stuff you're looking for, but Hybrid's new disc is great (if you're into that soundtrack-ish breaks type sound), and I really dig the last Prefuse 73 ep ("reads the books" i think).

**boobs** (2007-01-22):

right now i'm listening to:

Einoma - Undir Feilnótum (vertical form)
clark - body riddle (warp records)
Melvins/LustMord - pigs of the roman empire (not electronic really but quite good)

proem - merck 5 (a bunch of live sets the label released in mp3 format on a data CD. i think its their last release ever)

Secret Frequency Crew - forest of the echo downs (schematic)

**rl** (2007-01-22):

try:
http://www.martialfunk.com/
(french netlabel)

**brettwiththedobro** (2007-01-22):

I second edIT---Crying Over Pros For No Reason is a favorite.
I'd add The Flashbulb ---Kirlian Selections
Richard Devine---Cautella
Vex'd---De Generate
Tom Burbank---Famous First words
Exile--Pro Agonist
dDamage--Radio Ape
etc.

**aKido** (2007-01-22):

Hey Chris, everyone,

buy the album Burial, by Burial. It's really good. If you check out some online reviews you'll run out and buy it i'm almost certain.

**noisegeek** (2007-01-22):

This is good, 'cause I've been searching for some new electronic stuff as well.
I've been digging some of the stuff on Shitkatapult ( http://www.shitkatapult.com/v3.3/ ); Apparat mostly. Also, not sure if you'd call it electronic, but Underworld-live had a link to zZz the other day ( http://www.soundofzzz.com/ ). Blew me away.

**noisegeek** (2007-01-22):

Oh, and even though it's a few years old, I still can't stop listening to the last Death in Vegas album "Satan's Circus". Incredible album.

**micester** (2007-01-22):

ok i also second richard devine awsome stuff one of the few out there who you can really call them sound designers all of his stuff is enjoyable in my eyes. Tim exile is a great one but i only recently got his new album but its funny as hell. Super 8 bit bros is pretty darn good as well. run return is amazing i think youd love that from what i have read on this site. piano overlord is really good as well. Im sure you have heard of them but pendulum is AMAZING only drum and bass i really like cause they made there own breaks and when they perform live they do a real live show guitars drums and a bass?. pete samples is one more guy thatd id suggest very cool stuff. ok thats all for now ill try and find some more

**Billy Palmier** (2007-01-22):

Hèhè, I'll be shameless and propose my own finished album…
Some nice laid-back summervibes

It's available on iTunes etc… soon also in cd version worldwide…

<a href=" http://www.billypalmier.com/ www.billypalmier.com</a>

**memedesigner** (2007-01-22):

How about MSTRKRFT? It's like Daft Punk, only from Canada. Pretty hip.

**Stef Stabilizer** (2007-01-22):

Third vote for edIT and also you might try Tip Hop by Tipper which is in the same vein, but a bit earlier I think. Both are in constant rotation on my unspecified music device.

In fact pretty much anything by Tipper or Si Begg (they do both up and down tempo stuff) is worth searching out for some future looking music that is amazingly produced.

**unempty** (2007-01-22):

Burial - Burial (http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=25310) @ Hyperdub is massive. Dubstep is where it's at these days.

**unempty** (2007-01-22):

Boxcutter is way dope too.
http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=21211

**Synth_Sleezey** (2007-01-22):

Music Blogs....

Is there a story here?

Like blogs which post MP3s and talk about them.

Anyone know any good ones?

Feels dirty to me but I also feel like I should know whats going on here.

**subbasshead** (2007-01-22):

I am really enjoying album by Dim Lite... very nice production... it made the Giles Peterson top 25 albums of 2006, which is where I heard a track first...

For pure electronic/dsp my favourites would be any of the 2 albums & one EP by Ryuichi Sakamoto & Alva Noto on raster noton label, or Fourcolor on 12k label... but you would have to appreciate minimalism to get into these.. I personally think through reduction these all have incredibly beautiful production values...

**subbasshead** (2007-01-22):

& yes I agree, theres some wicked development happening in dubstep - the burial or kode 9 albums are definitely worth checking out, but for a broader view of tunes its also worth downloading a few uk radio shows/mixes etc... like any new form, some of it is the emperors new clothes

**UpAngel180** (2007-01-22):

I second the Amon Tobin recommendation. Lately Boards of Canada have been getting a lot of time in my players as well.

**audioworld** (2007-01-22):

back to namm: why did no one mention the KORG Zero8 mixerr? (oh yes, chip collection calles it a "silly mixer"..)
- firewire across all inputs
- 2 external sends, 1 internal efx
- every rotary and button doubles as MIDI controller
- Kaoss-Pad like XY-Pad
.. this is for me THE innovation from this years winter namm, as it is the first mixer where every control can be used for audio or midi control...

**tom** (2007-01-22):

another thumbs up for Burial. Kode9 and the spaceape album - memories of the future is also worth checking out.

**Subliminal Fusion** (2007-01-22):

Venetian Snares
Milanese
Ra

**scientist** (2007-01-22):

1. machine drum's bidnezz. http://www.machinedrum.net/
2. dj c's 'boston' mix...its a singlehanded attempt at starting a new genre and does a good job of it. http://www.mashit.com/djc/DJ_C-Boston_Tracklist.html
3. the trouble and bass 12". http://flaminhotz.com/releases/
4. the field. http://www.kompakt-net.com/
and to pimp my own mixes...lots of hiphop/electronic crossover in there:
http://www.massmvmnt.com/massdstrction

on another note: what's a good stripped down usb/firewire interface. all i need is 2 quality outs to get a stereo signal out of a laptop and into a patch bay for routing/effecting/rerecording.

**SR** (2007-01-22):

I second Tom Burbank's "Famous First Words" - it's one of my favorites of the year (last year)

**aKido** (2007-01-22):

yep, "kode9", with the kirosawa movie sample.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=WaU-pnassYM

about "burial", there are rumours it might be aphex twin, which i don't believe that at all.

**myrnaloy** (2007-01-22):

The reissue of Tetsuo Inoue's World Receiver is excellent. I have enjoyed Kunststoff by Move D and Christopher Willits' Surf Boundries a lot lately as well. I agree that the Burial and the Kode9 are great - i find it hard to relate them to BT but, oh well. I have also gone back to Endless Summer by Fennesz since Mego put out the new edition. The best thing i have heard lately is the 4CD Trees Community - Christ Tree reissue, freak-out old style, made with electricity as far as i can tell.

On a separate (but related) tip, i bought myself a pair of Sennheiser 650s and a Benchmark DAC1 last week. Hooked them up to my CD player and i have to say, these are perhaps the greatest purchases i have even made relating to listening to music. There is no going back now.

**giantm** (2007-01-22):

Have you checked out all the stuff on thinnerism.com? They've got loads of great electronic music in freely downloadable album format. Also the last Trentmoller album was good, and is available via iTunes.

**Chris Randall** (2007-01-22):

Man, there's a lot of stuff here to check. The edIT shit seems to get the most mentions, so I'll look at that first. For what it's worth, I have both the Ryuichi Sakamoto & Alva Noto albums. I have everything Sakamoto-san has ever recorded that is available, as far as I know.

-CR

**inteliko** (2007-01-22):

This is a lil old but I picked up the CD and blasted it in my car over the weekend and been pumpin it in my car like its audio crack: Avalanches "Since I left you". Some of it is a lil girly, most is madness. I can see an Underworld fan liking this, it has electro/house flavor but focuses more on Soulful feel, with a load of electro influence. Filters and delays CLEVERLY used all over, colorful sounding, tasteful use of sample jacking, they definetly own an MPC, but done well.

**Mayur_FX** (2007-01-22):

another recommendation for Daedelus here

something that's a few years old but I keep meeting people who haven't so if you haven't heard it, check it out - 'Miles Gurtu' by Trilok Gurtu and Robert Miles (yes, THAT Robert Miles and no, it's NOT cheesy epic euro trance-lite).

**joshua_schnable** (2007-01-22):

some more music to throw out there -

thinnerism - http://www.thinner.cc/
I'll second the tip to the thinner site. You could d/l stuff for months from here if you're into more minimal dub stuff. The Ben Businovski is great, as well as deluge (more IDM on the latter).

deadbeat - "version immersion EP" (on iTunes and eMusic)
More dub-oriented stuff here. His full lengths are excellent as well, if you've not heard them.

**joe** (2007-01-22):

nice to see a bunch of idm listed. but jesus, no links?

tom burbank (all four of the songs on myspace are on his album)
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=71710938

edit
http://myspace.com/edit

none of the stuff on his page is whats on his album and while it kinda represents what he does, the album is a bit more enjoyable than that. last i remember you could preview the "pros" album on itunes and here http://www.planet-mu.com/

the flashbulb
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=94831

http://theflashbulb.net/index2.html

while i like the flashbulb, he's gonna be a bit harsh to non fan's of the genre. hate to throw up the squarepusher comparison, but the similarities are there. kirlian selections is a good chunk of what he does, but theres a bit of filler on the album and the production on the non glitch happy tracks may not be up to par. pretty good selection of his stuff on the official site.

dont know if youre a fan of telefon tel aviv but theyve got a few goodies.
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=42233895

and four tet
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=65642225

rounds and pause were my favorite, theyre previewable on itunes. all the stuff on his myspace page seems to be new. havent really checked what hes been up to in a while.

**myrnaloy** (2007-01-22):

If you are a Sakamoto fan you may like some or even all the stuff David Sylvian has been releasing on his Samadhi Sound label. Sylvian's stuff, along with the Nine Horses and Akira Rabelais stuff is all good. I also recommend Northern by Taylor Deupree.

<namedrop>
On the Sakamoto tip, i had the privilege of working with him on a project with William Gibson several years ago and, although we never met face to face, he was wonderful to deal with (and very polite).
</namedrop>

**aKido** (2007-01-22):

aKido http://www.myspace.com/akidomusic

new album coming soon...

;-)

**Porco Rosso** (2007-01-22):

Not underground...

And perhaps filed under easy listening....

Felix Laband? He's available on Emusic.

**blask** (2007-01-22):

...and there's the Sakamoto/Noto Live DVD, i picked it up last week, haven't listened/watched yet, but gorgeous packaging.
I would also add, anything by COH

http://www.mego.at/coh.html

**SR** (2007-01-23):

Did I mention Tom Burbank?

**thesimulacre** (2007-01-23):

NOBOT Media out of Denver. More specifically the artists Cacheflowe (Automate Everything), Scaffolding (Field of Opposites) or Wayne Winters (find anything you can until the album comes out... SO SICK). You may want to hold off for the upcoming compilation. I have heard a few of the tracks from it and they are fabulous!!! I want to describe it, but I don't want to pidgeonhole it, so just hit up www.nobotmedia.com

Personally, I may never release an album, so maybe I'll just send you some of my finished tracks... there aren't many, that's for sure.

www.myspace.com/innerspacerecordings

**blask** (2007-01-23):

Burial? ok, only checking it out now... so far it just sounds like Enigma 2006, only very over-compressed. Sorry i like dub, i like electronic, hell, i like anything good this is just crap. I'll give it more of a listen, but this seems something spawned more of Delerium than Aphex twin.
I was hoping to like this. Get the re-issue of Fennesz - Endless Summer, a classic.

**synchromesh** (2007-01-23):

Speaking of Ryuichi Sakamoto, he does a set about 15-20 min. into this BBC radio show, the blurb for which reads: "It's the beatless special. Plus an exclusive ambient mix from the legend Ryuichi Sakamoto." http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/maryannehobbs/

Via Warren Ellis. http://www.warrenellis.com/?p=3584

On the same page is a link to another site with a variety of tracks available for download, almost all from artists I hadn't heard of and presumably not crap. I haven't listened to them yet, so I can't comment further. http://www.textura.org/pages/downloads.htm

Bought that Burial album. Haven't listened to that yet either. http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=25310

Gotta love the internet. And now, back to work for me...

**musicmachinemaker** (2007-01-23):

Best electronica from 2006 was: The Knife
www.theknife.net

**lifter** (2007-01-23):

If you're into pop-ish electronic sound check out the Parisian "Colder" http://www.myspace.com/coldercolder www.myspace.com</a>myspace.com</a> and Finish "Erlend Oye" <a href="<a href=" http://www.myspace.com/erlendoyeplease www.myspace.com</a>www.myspace.com</a> .You might like Canadian "Junior Boys" as well <a href="<a href=" http://www.myspace.com/juniorboys

**micester** (2007-01-23):

ok so i just remembered this one band that i cant stop listening to

jackson and his computer band

http://www.jacksonandhiscomputerband.com/home.php

you can listen to his whole album on here and yeah i have been loving his stuff for a while now

**noisegeek** (2007-01-23):

Here's a related question for everyone. How do you all go about finding new music?

**stretta** (2007-01-23):

Archetribe http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?s=143441&playListId=80845042

**UpAngel180** (2007-01-23):

Avalanches "Since I left you" was a great disc. I would also recommend Ken Ishii, his stuff may be a bit hard to find, but there is a Brian Eno influence there that I think you will enjoy.

**SR** (2007-01-23):

The Knife is definetly NOT my thing...

**subbasshead** (2007-01-23):

you have EVERYTHING Sakamoto has released?
wow, including his film scores? thats a lot of music...
re his film scores, Tony Takitani is a beautiful film
but Sakamotos score is so beautiful it almost makes we weep...
such beautiful sparse piano that says such vast amounts with
the barest of notes...
didnt know there was a Noto/Sakamoto dvd!
wow, thats one concert i would have circumnavigated the globe
to see, pending time & money....
Bricolage (remixes) is an eclectic bunch, taylor deuprees being the
stand out imho...

**DaveAA** (2007-01-23):

Barrage is a great act;
http://www.feralmedia.com/barrage.php?selectedPage=Releases

Two less obscure acts I've been really getting into lately are Matmos and The Books.

**javahut** (2007-01-23):

3rd ups on the Avalanches "Since I Left You". Very good record.

Also, older stuff... Pest's 1st record (that I'm aware of) "Necessary Measures" is pretty hot and crazy. Their 2nd one... "All Out Fall Out"... not so much... not as "out there" as NM.

Also, a couple of records I don't think too many people have heard of...

Guillermo E. Brown's "Soul At The Hands Of The Machine" is awesome. Semi-jazz drummer of Matthew Shipp/William Parker fame goes wacko jazz electronica.

And for dub... Jamie Saft's (keyboards for John Zorn, Chris Speed) "Bread Crumb Sins" will "take you on a trip without leaving the farm" ;-)... great stuff.

Oh... and let me mention one other... any of the 3 records by Monsieur Leroc are worth having... crazy greasy dubbed up electronic retro funk rap.

**neilium** (2007-01-23):

The Knife? oof!

Basic Channel/Maurizio/Rhythm & Sound still pretty much set my world on fire (old stuff, tho). Motor's first album is pretty cool stripped down stuff, and I second the COH recommendation.

**micester** (2007-01-24):

i find it by trail and error and myspace. theres a lot of crap on myspace but there is some pretty darn intresting stuff.

**UpAngel180** (2007-01-24):

I'd throw Faithless and DJ Krush on your list to check out as well.

**dan s** (2007-01-24):

junior boys! excellent warm electronic production, nice melodies

**Kane Ikin** (2007-01-25):

Hey - this is a shamless plug - but late last year I released my debut album on chicago based Hefty Records, it's all electronically made, but you wouldn't know to hear it, anyway you can hear it all over at itunes, bleep.com, boomkat.com etc just look up Solo Andata, our records titled fyris swan
Give it a listen, could be what you're lookin for, something pretty left of center. We did a remix for Fennesz and Sakamoto if that gives an idea...
peace
Kane

**gedanken** (2007-01-25):

In terms of great production and listenability, I'd say Surgeon (Anthony Child). He's the don.

**gedanken** (2007-01-25):

Most of it is a bit bangin' though. A good place to start would be 'Balance' on Tresor.

**Gold Code** (2007-01-29):

Recommended:

1. Jackson & His Computer Band ( http://www.jacksonandhiscomputerband.com/ )
-I second this recommend. Lots of people have tried to capture this idea but he was one of the few who actually got it right.

2. Claro Intellecto ( http://www.claro-intelecto.com/ )
-AWESOME production, and solid songs that vary from jack tracks to ambient (as in not just noise, but you can actually listen and enjoy)

3. Dave Aju ( http://www.myspace.com/daveaju )
-production and ideas is what he is about. He's on the french label Circus Company-which is worth checking out in it's own right ( http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=34574182 )

-checkum out-
