MusikMesse starts tomorrow, the great grandpa of all music-related trade shows. Any rumors of New Hotness you know about? [Apple Insider](http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2603) thinks that a new iteration of Logic is coming out tomorrow. According to them, Apple's briefing with retailers should be taking place right about now, so I imagine we'll have leaks here in a couple hours.

Other than that, anything exciting coming that anyone wants to share juicy tidbits about?

Well, Ken MacBeth has come up with the white-face M5 - M5N - that has some enhancements to the envelopes and vcos. Seriously good-looking box, as is the original.

www.macbethstudiosystems.com has images and more info.

There are rumors of Clavia unveiling a Nord Lead 4, which I'm sure will have Chris (not) wetting his pants. But since I have a NL2 & 3, I'm kinda curious.

**Chris Randall** (2007-03-26):

I'd be wetting my pants if I was in a Cars cover band. Or Dream Theater. I'm not in either, so you're right about the (not).

Amazon is taking pre-orders for a Logic Pro X book due 04/30 so my guess is the Logic thing is true. Curious to see what almost three years of no-major-updates will yield.

**Ataru** (2007-03-26):

I would like to see Logic 8 show up, but am starting to doubt it will ever be announced... until Leopard is out at least.

I spend 90% of my time in Live or Max/MSP now, but I still prefer Logic Pro 7 for mixing & compositing recordings, and I love Logic's plugs, especially Ringshifter & Sculpture.

I already have my next year's worth of paychecks spent in my head on stuff that already is out, so I only hope for things that will upgrade/improve those, at the same price. For example, a Sherman Filterbank 3! Yeah, right.

**Ataru** (2007-03-26):

btw, the Logic Pro X book is just a placeholder, the author of the book has publicly stated that it hasn't been written yet and he hasn't seen the new version of Logic either.

**Chris Randall** (2007-03-26):

Personally, I've used Logic off and on in all its forms since Notator 2 on the Atari, and I have a pretty good feel for how they do their major upgrades. Apple doesn't seem to have changed that outlook at all.

What we'll see is the same suite of synths and effects; all the effects will get new UIs, the environment will be gone (it doesn't fit Apple's modus operandi at all), replaced by a Studio Manager ripped straight from Cubase 4, and everything will get the same look as Final Cut, or more to the point, Apogee's current Logic-centric offerings, which are real hardware versions of the Apple brushed steel look. Otherwise, it will be more or less the same.

We'll know shortly, in any event. Throwing Apple in to the mix means that you could very easily find that the new iteration won't load Logic saves, or they've decided that AudioUnits are stupid and have come up with yet another new plugin format, or it'll only do 192, or not import WAV files any more. Seriously, that's how that company operates, so anything is possible.

WALDORF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

**tom** (2007-03-26):

i hope they get rid of the key, BUT keep it secure.

**moyashi** (2007-03-26):

"Pro X" huh? Why not "7.5" or "8"? Where do you go from X - X2? XI?
Well, I hope there have been well-considered and useful improvements, not gimmicky "new features" a la the stupid and already stale new name.
I'm getting so sick of the letter X. X is what illiterates used to sign in place of their names. The joke is way old and just isn't cool anymore, hasn't been for a looong time. I guess I'm pissed-off since I rely heavily on the app and am thus inherently conservative regarding it.
I also don't like seeing good apps gobbled-up by corporate behemoths. Has Yamaha been kind to Nuendo? I hope it has for your sake.
I'm also pissed that there isn't a greater spectrum of choice in the DAW market. There should be Logic for Windows, Samplitude/Sequoia for Mac, and some Linux entrepreneur should carefully nail down a distro that can actually be depended on for music. Done in concert with certain DAW partners, developing in conservative and disciplined lockstep, there could be a Linux-based workstation of considerable power, ease of use, and low cost. But no - they're too busy pushing the envelope, and can't be bothered to support a real world product. Wasted opportunity so far.

**Ataru** (2007-03-26):

Logic Pro X is NOT the name, that's just a temporary title for the book on Amazon.

**moyashi** (2007-03-26):

*sheepish grin*

...yeah, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was something similarly over-Applified. Other statements stand.

**teledub** (2007-03-26):

The recent nosedive that the cost of NI's Reaktor 5 took should be a pretty clear indication of their plans of an upgrade. At least I hope it is announced this week.

**Ataru** (2007-03-26):

I'm hearing that it's just Logic Pro 7.3... don't hold me to it.

Reaktor 6, already?

**synthetic** (2007-03-26):

I really hope the Logic Environment doesn't go away completely. You can do anything in there, like having a copy of Max running in the background. Everytime I think "I wish I could..." I've been able to do it in the Environment. They could add a more friendly version in addition to the Environment, that would be OK with me. Just don't turn Logic Pro into Garage Band – some of us can handle professional tools.

I saw an ad for a new Prism audio interface in EM, called the Orpheus. It looks to be competing with the Apogee Ensemble.

**ecallender** (2007-03-26):

I think CR's got it just about right. Apple should FINALLY fix those fucking buffers, though.

BTW — Go, Waldorf, Rah! Rah! Rah!

**noisegeek** (2007-03-26):

You know, I keep seeing write-ups about linux audio applications getting closer and closer to maturity, but what I don't get is why I'd want to run audio apps on a full blown linux distro in the first place. It seems to me that the smart thing to do with open source audio would be to build an OS purely for audio. Strip all the unnecessary crap out of the kernel, and make the OS work well for one thing and one thing only: Audio.

**penzoil washington** (2007-03-27):

I'm psyched about Liquid Mix V2 software which adds sidechain eq and more.

**Jan Czmok** (2007-03-27):

Well. Originally anyware-instruments was also announcing a new module:

http://sequencer.de/synth/index.php/Trigger-Clockbox

It's a real module. I am getting one of the first CloxBox'es from Anyware by mail today or tomorrow.

Extensive testing, photographs are more soon.

... Also another module (VCF) is coming up, so stay tuned ...

**stretta** (2007-03-27):

It is possible Apple will scrap 'Logic' altogether and relaunch it under a new product name.

**moyashi** (2007-03-27):

noisegeek -
I concur. I'm not looking for a daily-living desktop replacement, just a lean-n-mean specialized workhorse. Aside from audio, it should only be able to download updates, print scores and do local networking. It frustrates me that there aren't more big commercial DAW offerings for Linux, considering that Linux and OSX are both apples (pun not intended) from the same Unix tree. I'm sure there are devils in the details, but it's got to be much easier than porting to-and-from Mac/Win. That being said, my biggest wet dream is Sequoia on Linux.

**Ataru** (2007-03-27):

well, the biggest problem in porting audio apps to linux from Mac OS X is core audio, vst and audio units, no? Unless the devs are writing their entire audio engine from the ground up, plug-in architecture included. (Which they are, actually, in the linux daw market I know about.)

**Angstrom** (2007-03-27):

not really a messe rumor, but Ableton and Cycling74 have formed a partnership

http://www.ableton.com/cycling-partnership?i=hp

**Ataru** (2007-03-27):

I have to say "FUCK YEAH!" to the potential there!

**Machines** (2007-03-27):

I'd like to see the new version of Logic just as much as everybody else, but like CR, I fear they may fuck it up. I can't imagine that they'd scrap the Audio Units format. It's still relatively new, isn't it?

I can see the Environment getting an overhaul to make it a bit more user friendly, but hopefully they keep the nuts and bolts there for those who understand it as it is now.

If they turn it into a bigger and badder Garageband, I will shoot myself. Keep it a pro app. It's what it deserves to be and where it belongs. I use Logic instead of Garageband for a reason.

**Det3** (2007-03-27):

Matrixsynth is leaking pics of a new rumored synth - looks like a monster like the old Matrix-12. Multi-LCDs, lots of knobs, etc. etc. etc. We'll see more at midnight tonight.

**semtek** (2007-03-27):

Tc electronic have some new products to show at messe. There's a tube tech emulation for powercore, some fairly average -looking guitar related stuff, and a 'performance' tool which they haven't shed much light on. www.tcelectronic.com

oh, and a beta of the powercore software for intel mac.

**boobs** (2007-03-27):

i just hope logic doesn't become garbageband pro.

that will just further push me into DP's arms.

**giantm** (2007-03-27):

It would be really nice to see the audio handling in the environment go more the way of Reaktor. I would be one step closer to happiness if I could draw in, and visualize routings. Especially if it applied to things like sidechains that can not be deduced at all visually via the current environment.

The biggest thing that could be done to improve my Logic experience however would be to extend freezing to buses and aux tracks. I understand that everything feeding the bus/aux would need to be frozen also, but I end up burning way too much CPU time currently on complex bus routing/processing.

**boobs** (2007-03-27):

they could also have a much more flexible bounce mode.. maybe like live's. multitrack bounce etc. that's an incredibly useful feature in live and is the smartest thing they've done since live 4 for my $$.

logic is far behind in lot's of ways and still has some leftover dumbness from previous versions.

i'm more excited to see the hardware that's around at messe though. if nothing happens w/logic i won't be surprised and won't much care. i have low expectations for logic these days.

that synth at matrixsynth looks dope. lot's of i/o and what appear to mod rougins on the inputs?
