Oh, man. I seem to have stepped in shit...

From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.

Oh, that’s not shit. It’s Logic 8. And it’s all over my shoe. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference. If all you fanboys can put your tender feelings aside for a minute, I’ll use the opportunity to say that it’s official: Logic 8 is fucking tragic.

I won’t even bother to enumerate the issues our customers are having, because each one is different, and there are a lot. In my own testing, which is as extensive as testing can be without actually using the DAW professionally, which I refuse to do, Logic will run for almost 10 minutes without a crash, three times in four. I was doing a search on the Intertubes this morning trying to see if someone else had come up with a solution for this stupid multi-threading error, and must have found a couple hundred different posts that read like this:

Hi, everybody! I’m having this weird problem with Logic 8 where XXX happens when I do YYY. Does anyone know anything at all about this?

Sigh.

Okay, we’re running a serious risk of getting off on a frothing rant here, so suffice to say that I had warm fuzzies for L8 for like six minutes, and now I’m back on a strict diet of Haterade. I’d hate to be the support staff at NI this month.

Hmm, I think I'll wait on that upgrade.

All my problems went away when I stopped using the built in metering. I was experiencing the crashes every 10 minutes before that.

It's weird, Logic 8 seems to be one of those things that works awesomely fine on some and totally and completely sucks on some others. Some of the people I know (of those who actually use their sequencer / DAW as their day job or at least pretty much daily) who got the update are applauding how stable and cool and teh suparr usable it is...

... and some others are cursing that it's pretty much crashing every 15-30 minutes and has the weirdest and most annoying bugs and incompatibilities ever seen in a sequencer software. My favourite that I heard so far: clicking and dragging a point in an audio track's volume / pan automation curve results in L8 changing the audio track to an audio instrument track and instantiating EVP88 on it.

Maybe I'll hold back upgrading a bit too.

My experiences put me firmly in the latter camp. I don't use it to make music, for the most part, so I'm not running in to little bugs. Just the "crashing every 15-30 minutes" on maybe 3 starts out of 4. The fourth one, it crashes on start. This happens on both my Intel Macs. I haven't installed it on my G4, for what it's worth.

My experience with AD customers shows that what vae is saying is pretty much across the board. There's no rhyme nor reason to the problems I'm seeing, as a developer. I will say that Cubase 4 is much more stable, but still has odd problems like this as well. However, the problems are all repeatable and identifiable, which makes it much less annoying. (e.g. "when I do _this_, this other thing happens, every time.")

Are the problems mostly on Motorola chips? I've heard that Intel processors are working smoothly, but G4/G5 has muy problems.

I just got my copy today. Hmmm. Hopefully 8.0.1 is right around the corner.

From my experience, the issues I'm experiencing and getting reports on don't seem to fall along strict CPU lines. My own issues are 100% Intel; I will say that the majority (60%) of the issues AD customers are having are G5-based. I have no G4 reports whatsoever.

The only crash I've had was with a NI plug.. but that's nothing new.

I got my LP8 upgrade last week and after [very] little perusing of the interwebz, am holding off on installing the behemoth till Apple releases some updates...[un]fortunately, I know better than to hold my breath waiting for this to happen.

"I'd hate to be the support staff at NI this month."

This or next month, with Leopard coming out in less than four days.

In other DAW update news, Cubase 4.1 just dropped. It offers (finally) "the ability to re-route signals of all summing objects
such as buses, FX returns and groups directly into audio
tracks allows you to instantly re-record signals from
summing objects onto audio tracks in real-time." BTW, C4 crashes on me fairly regularly. Ableton Live is the most stable DAW in my experience, but give it a few more years of bloat and I'm sure it'll catch up with the older DAWS.
