Adam's "inner geek" aside, sometimes computers make me want to go out and kill things. Is there a way to insert a DVD in to a Macintosh and select, say, Chapter 1, and select, say, "Save as FLV", press "Go," and come back in a couple minutes to an FLV file that will actually play? So far as I can tell, the answer is "no," but seeing how the Macintosh is the hub of my digital lifestyle, I know that not to be true.

And the first person that points me to either Wondershare or Aimersoft (which are, in fact, the same exact program with different skins, and I use the word "program" to describe a collection of code, rather than the more prosaic ideal, which means "something that, like, works and shit," and the word "skin" to describe a UI-shaped cock being crammed in my eye-holes) will be [Rickrolled.](http://youtube.com/watch?v=RSsJ19sy3JI)

I think probably the easiest way to do this (read: least buttons/menus) would probably be a combo of Handbrake to get the chapter selected and ripped to H264 or MP4, and then FFmpegX to transcode that file to FLV. I have no idea if it works, but those things are easy enough to try.

We had to do that to pull some clips from a rider dvd comp and the dude we were working with used this:

maybe the same pieces of shit you were referring to - not sure.

please don't rickroll me.

MacTheRipper will cover the ripping.I use it to back up my purchased dvd's.FFmpegX should do the rest.Hope that helps and don't get Rickrolled!!!

**Chris Randall** (2008-03-19):

Yup. It's the same piece of shit software. It works in Leopard, well, not at all. Start singin'

I should mention at this point that Adam's comment about his "inner geek" in the previous thread had me in stitches, and still does. The whole thought of someone that sits in the shadow of a 5' tall modular synth all day coding quirky music software, then relaxes by building papercraft models of mechwarriors and geometrical origami having an "inner geek" gave me a severe case of the giggles.

VLC has some options too.My inner geek is going to get Rickrolled.

I use Fairmount to copy, then ffmpegX to convert. If that's some port of that stuff you were talking about sorry, I didn't know.

**BirdFLU** (2008-03-19):

Oh and if you want that all to be one step, someone somewheer probably wrote an apple script or a workflow thingie, but that someone isn't me. Pleezie no rickrollee me.

**Chris Randall** (2008-03-19):

Okay, you're all off the hook. Rick Astley can go back in his cage. The Handbrake suggestion was (close enough) what I wanted. If I encode for iPhone (really?) and remove the iPod Atom, the resulting file goes right in to YouTube Land with nary a problem.

Fuckin' Industrial, man.

+1 for mactheripper. It would be fairly simple to make an automator script to make everything one step, but oly worth it if you were planning to do it a whole whole lot.
