My rather eccentric music taste makes me kind of easy to pin down, I think. Witness: there are exactly four artists that currently release records that I actually get a little excited about. Those four artists are Underworld, Tom Waits, Einstürzende Neubauten, and today's topic, Nick Cave (w/ or w/o the Bad Seeds.)

With all of these artists, there's some releases I like and some I don't. I suppose Underworld is the most consistent; I can't, offhand, think of any record I like less than any other. More about particular songs, and really only Bruce Lee when you get down to it. There are plenty of Tom Waits records I can't stand at all, and Neubauten, well, I don't listen to much prior to Tabula Rasa any more, probably because I'm getting old. I really enjoy their last few albums, though, and the newest has been getting heavy play lately.

Same with Nick Cave. I'm not one of those slobbering types that thinks he's Bela Legosi Incarnate or any of that bullshit. For the albums I do own, there are only three or four tracks I actually can stand on each, with the exception of Grinderman, which I like all the way through, and Murder Ballads, which I like except when a chick starts singing. With this in mind, I look forward to Tuesday's release of Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! From the video, and the fact that the entire album is on Myspace [(here...)](http://www.myspace.com/nickcaveandthebadseeds) it seems that the rather abstracted approach to writing/recording explored on the Grinderman album has been extrapolated in to the whole Bad Seeds lineup quite nicely. His albums take a little while to grow on me, but I give him a chance, which is more than I can say for about 99.999999999% of the new music I hear these days.

that's some catchy shit! i've never really investigated his music but seen him on the occasional talk show. i guess i need to get with it.

didn't he write the screenplay for "the proposition"? which is a great movie imo.

I feel the same way about Underworld - I really enjoy all their records, and in general, there's only a song here or there I'm not into ("Bruce Lee", "Rowla"). Their last album is what I would consider their weakest, but it's still got more goodness that most artists.

My issue with Nick Cave (and to a lesser extent, Tom Waits) is that you really only need to have one, maybe two albums to "get it". For me, those Nick Cave albums are "The Mercy Seat" and "The Good Son". Plus the Birthday Party compilation. All his records have great material, but after a while it's very same-y.

Tom Waits, too. I have a bunch of his records (my lovely wife is a fan) but I really only ever listen to "Bone Machine".

i love that record. i listen to it all the time. it's my fav.

With me, whichever one he released most recently is usually my fave, but I don't generally listen to it much after the next one comes out. I mean, I wore "Real Gone" out, but as soon as Orphans came out, it's all I listened to. (Being a three-album set, I was still able to make a playlist an hour-and-a-half long even though I only really like about half the album.)

I love "Oblivion W/ Bells." I don't think it's any weaker than any other. That's the beauty of music. It's subjective.

Personally i dont get Underworld. I really like the music that they make but i cant stand their MC/Singer. It just sounds like hes talking a load of jibberish most of the time. Hes nearly (but not quite nearly) as bad as that maxi-pad-jazz shite from Faithless.

The new Nick Cave song is class. Its been getting a lot of airtime on 6music so ive heard it a fair bit and i like. The video is cool too. I like the crazy dissonant guitar that you can hear all the way through the song.

Plus the dude wrote the proposition (as boobs mentioned) as well which is a class, if disturbing, film.

I'm 100% with you on Underworld. "Oblivion with Bells" is easily one of the best albums of 2007. I like it as much as Arcade Fire's "Neon Bible" which I think is completely rock solid as a complete album experience in our age of singles.

I have a morbid fascination with that video. It really works.

Lazarus was the first Nick Cave album I'd ever listened to a, couple days ago. My girl thought it was bizarre, I found it to be the business. I'm going to have to hunt down some more stuff by this guy. :)

**quantize** (2008-03-02):

People who think Karl Hyde's lyrics are just jibberish (and to an extent thats the f**king idea idiot!) need to do their homework..

Start with looking up the word 'free association'

and googling Eno and Bowie.

**quantize** (2008-03-02):

PS Cave and Waits i can take...in small doses.

Waits is way more creative musically and production wise...Cave more so lyrically.

His ego though is a little repugnant.
