Isn't there a Chinese stringed lap instrument that is actually designed to do this? As seen in this awesome non-fight in Hero:

Not quite sure, but it seems to be called a guzheng.

**oniwe** (2008-03-25):

There is no fretboard on a guzheng, the strings are simply plucked. No hammer-ons like Mr. Erik Mongrain does so well.

His music is great, but I'm looking forward to hearing his stuff in a few years. When he concentrates on melody rather than chops...

**Chris Randall** (2008-03-25):

There's quite a few different instruments that are played in this manner, both Western and oriental.

I just thought he was fairly good at what he was doing. It's an interesting sound. I wonder what he tunes it to. Hard to tell from the video.

He appears to be a keyboardist stuck in guitarist's body. Wait until he discovers the Chapman Stick.

**rapfreak** (2008-03-25):

It reminded me of that kid in August Rush.

**inteliko** (2008-03-25):

...sounds like devil tuning but to A instead of D. I'm too lazy to play around with tunings right now. And for those who dont know devil tuning is, starting from where low E should be: D G D G B D, sounds like work but all you really do is detune both E strings and A 2 steps lower, now go bust out your bottlenecks and capos and strum away.

**Chris Randall** (2008-03-25):

...and discover that you can magically play every single Rolling Stones song with almost no effort.

**Otter** (2008-03-25):

Sounds to me like the root is on the 6th string, and the root is E. So...kinda sounds like E B E G# B E (open E Major). Also kinda sounds like Kaki King's first album, only less dissonant.

@inteliko: maybe I'm misreading your comment, but D G D G B D is open G Major (not D). Consider my bottleneck "busted out"!

it sounds like michael hedges. it doesn't look like michael hedges.
