Portishead Out On A Limb...
From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.
Now, I’m a fair-weather Portishead fan, I’ll be honest. I, like many, like Glorybox but not much else. I have to say that they’re smokin’ a lot of weed in prep for their new album, if this little film is any indication. It is, in fact, reminding me of Joy Division, or maybe, well, I’ll let you be the judge.

Yeh this is my favourite track off the new lp
I hope they keep smokin' whatever it is...
Hmmm.
I used to work in a rehearsal studio in NYC, before I got all famous and shit (hardy har har) and this reminds me of the following scenario:
Girl 1: Hey, let's start a band!
Girl 2: Okay. Can you play anything?
Girl 1: No, but my boyfriend can. He was in a band once.
Girl 2: Okay, let's get a rehearsal room and work on some songs!
The sound emanating from the resulting event would sound very much like what was in that video. I'm sorry, but that Emperor is fuckin' nekkid.

Change it to "reminding me of Radiohead" and I'd nod my head along with the rest.
Ice age coming and all that.
i thought of in the nursery, for some reason. i'm not sure if losing the trip hop beatzz for something martial is a progression. still love her voice though.
The emperor may be naked, but I get the impression he's holding a sign that says "Yes, I know I'm naked".
I'm reminded of "Being Boiled".
How come it turned into the theme from Terminator at about four minutes?
I'm really happy to see they haven't tried to recreate their sound exactly. It sounds just enough like the remixes and b-sides they put out to let you see a logical progression.
I'm really looking forward to hear the rest.
I love the hell out of their 90's material, but I haven't made up my mind on this new stuff yet. I can't figure out if this is really bad, or just Portishead.
I can tell you that the Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man album I have sitting on my shelf is utter crap. So we have proof that her voice alone can't save an album. :)
I don't know that I can smoke enough anything to make me like this.
Of course, the prob is they just waited too damn long. How do you follow up 2 strong albums after what, almost ten years?
Dunno - I would have preferred to hear something closer to their original 90's sound. They already "innovated" enough.

Ditto. The two currently released studio albums are awesome and the Roseland NYC live must be one of the best live albums I own (though not THE best). I did like the Gibbons & Rustin Man record too, but it's more "nice" than "awesome". Beth often sounds a lot like Janis Joplin. I think she even used to sing in a Janis cover band or if not, she should have...
I didn't like the new live songs on YouTube at all though, and I don't know what to say about this one.
