Atomica : Greyscale

Atomica : Greyscale

If you like well-produced, moody downtempo, you’re in luck. Positron! is pleased to announce the release of POSI022, Greyscale, by The Atomica Project. This is a digital-only release, VBR MP3 and FLAC for US$10.00, which is the price of a pack of gum in the UK, once you figure in VAT.

Atomica is Wade Alin doing most of the typing, but a fair percentage of the Positron Family, including myself and Bounte, make appearances. The Atomica Project website is here, and as it is a posiNET site, your login and password from here at Analog Industries also works there. I should have mentioned this a couple days ago, but I am demonstrably retarded. (In all honesty, tax time got the better of me.)

I know there was discussion of this before, regarding the illogical requirement of cover art with digital-only releases. You know, since there is no cover. :) But looking at the above 150x150 image, it is completely illegible. Looking at the 300x300 version on shopPOSI is a little better, making the Atomica part more readable, but the album title is indecipherable then.

I'm not asking for bigger cover art, as I will end up using a 200x200 version myself, but I am maybe suggesting that cover art for digital-only releases may want to have their design focused on being readable at the common thumbnail sizes that people are going to be using. 150x150 would be a good target size, as that is what shopPOSI uses for the majority of the site. At 150x150 I would say that all four words in the above image should be readable. :)

I understand that there is artistic vision involved, but vision needs to be balanced with practicality, doesn't it?

nope. not really. ; ) i mean, i guess it depends on why you release records. i make $$ elsewhere, the atomica project is a place i can do shit like- make my album cover illegible @ 150x150. it's not intentional, just worked out that way. it's kind of like telling autechre their drum beats aren't straightforward enough.

as a general rule, i trust people to "get it" without it being spelled out in big block letters - commercially, i know that's a major flaw. but it is what it is. the majority (all) mp3 players will tell you who you're listening to. the image is meant to give you a general sense and feeling of the record.

Allrighty then, Wade! :) No offense intended of course. I was just just offering up a viewpoint.

I loved the hell out of the first album. So much so that it is one of the few discs to make it through the great reduction of my CD collection (1500+ -> ~200). I will of course pick up the new one at some point, as well.

none taken at all - heh, if you get the record, i promise to send you a high res version of the album cover, how's that?

Sweet! Will procure as soon as I get home.

The Gravity single was awesome btw...will be sure to be out in full force for the next Dark Room gig ...and by full force I don't mean "accidentally spent the whole afternoon doing shots with a mexican lady and her nephew around the corner" that was me on the last microanut tour ;-)

I don't know about the "accidentally" part, but the rest is true enough.

You know, I wasn't completely feeling Metropolitan, but I really like this a lot. I felt similarly about the Gravity single material. Definitely found a certain groove with this release.

    Good stuff Wade and Company.
