Friday Open Threadage...

From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.

Okay, we’ve got Dubstation 1.5 VST done on both Mac and Windows; the AU is giving us a little bit of grief as usual, but that should be hammered out shortly. (AU users, feel free to go watch this awesome video while you’re waiting.) I imagine that I’ll be uploading the new installers to the server on Monday or Tuesday, if all goes well. Since we’re essentially swapping one product for another, as far as the store is concerned, I can’t just put up the Windows one; they both have to go up at the same time, so unfortunately you Windows people will have to tough it out. It’ll give you a taste of the other side for a change. ;-)

No open thread topic in particular. What’s on your mind?

NOTE: I was gonna make the open-thread subject eight-channel ADA convertors, but I just found out I owe the IRS a five-digit number, so that’s not gonna be happening this month. They can take that economic stimulus package and ram it up their collective asses.

Wow. Five-digits of holy fucking shit. I just lost any entrepreneurial ambitions that may have crossed this cranium.

Meat Beat Manifesto is on tour and playing a smaller [but great sounding] venue in my town...looking forward to that. Richard Devine just released a sample set that appears promising...even if it sounds too processed. That seems to be a problem with a lot of 'em, though...

I listened to the samples on the Sony site. I wanted to like it so much, I almost bought it without listening to them. After I did, I didn't buy it. Nothing against Mr. Devine whatsoever, as he is extremely gifted, but they definitely didn't make me think "hey, I can't do that myself." Perhaps the choices that Sony made viz. the samples weren't the best? Anyone here buy it?

    Sucks about the taxes! Ugh!

What's on my mind? What's the easiest way to learn the guitar? Mine has been sitting in the corner of my living room mocking me for going on 5 years now. :)

You guys were so awesome regarding trackers last week, that I figured I'd ask about this as well. Thanks!

I went ahead and ordered the sample-set. I feel it's necessary to support the folks in the industry that deserve respect [not-to-mention being one of the 2 people based in my town that aren't in the rap game].

Regardless of what was previewed, he's a bad dude. I'm pretty confident I can find something that will be worth the 69 bucks...teehee...'69'

I got rickrolled, too. It was bad enough back in the days of goatse and tubgirl, but these internet memes seem to keep gravitating towards ever more crass and disgusting images.

I've got a question for anyone here who does electronic music (most, I gather). When working on a purely electronic track do you tend to write, record, then mix in three separate stages; or do you sort of writerecordmix?

I ask because I've been finding that when I do electronic stuff I tend toward the latter, but I wonder if I'm short changing myself by skipping the formal mix stage.

    Any thoughts?

Oh, good to know someone else's actually doing that too ;) Yes, I've been doing the writerecordmix thing for so many years now, that every time I'm working on a genre / project where that method doesn't work well for some reason or another, it takes quite a bit to adjust to the idea of doing everything in separate phases properly. It does have its upsides and downsides.

Like darklordjames, I would appreciate any tips on how the hell to pick up guitar playing. I can do at least keyboards, bass and trombone well enough to work on some songs and ideas (even though I suck because I don't just play and practise enough). But the cheapo Epiphone Les Paul I have just sits in the corner and occasionally makes me play clichey funk licks or Stairway to Heaven when it's bored enough. I seem to have had some type of guitar around since I was a kid but I've never actually learnt to play or known where to start.
