This one is really for the non-US readers, as an example of how American politicians go insane after they lose a primary attempt. This fellow is Mike Gravel. He was a Democratic candidate for president, but he was soundly thrashed early in the primaries. He dropped out, and decided to run as a Libertarian. (For those that don't know, Libertarian is Latin for "Xenophobic Redneck.") This is a blatantly obvious attempt at making some sort of artificial meme, of course, but it's still silly enough to laugh at, especially for us.

I think there's a good chance that Gravel was insane even before he entered the Democratic primary.

Agreed with SWR, as anyone who has seen the rock+lake video can attest.

Back in the day, Gravel was pretty influential though, having been the one to enter the Pentagon Papers into the congressional record, and having staged a one-man filibuster to try to end the draft.

well, there goes the one Beatles tune i kinda liked... thanks. :)

Reminds me very much of William Shatner's cover of Pulp's(?) Common People. I think this track is pretty nice. I love when old white guys who aren't poets do spoken word.

LOL ...Xenophobic redneck...
You know youre a redneck Jedi if you tell Yoda to go back where he came from.

**Chris Randall** (2008-04-03):

I'm surprised Lou Dobbs hasn't started using this as his intro video. It's right up his alley.

i'm sure it'll be on the daily show or colbert report if lou dobbs doesn't jump on it. it's pretty outrageously funny/weird/ridiculous/sad/strange.

My new year's resolution was to stalk and kill Lou Dobbs

At the risk of suffering the "The Wrath Of Chris" and getting my ass banned for life, as well as waking up with one less kidney and a big nasty scar, your definition for Libertarian is about as far away from accurate as our chances of having one elected president.

One the other hand, if you're only being tongue in cheek, then your tongue is in Oregon and your cheek is somewhere near Minsk. It still doesn't add up. Go to Cato.org, or Reason.com and primer up.

Libertarians are open-border, free trade, anti-drug war, anti-Iraq war, and basically open to any transaction you and any other consenting adult can dream up and agree upon without coercion. We want the government out of our bedrooms, out or pocket books and most certainly out of our music studios. If that qualifies as "Xenophophobic Redneck", then I guess you better count me in, hand me a can of Skoal, and a marriage proposal from my sister.

Mike Gravel can call himself a Libertarian but that doesn't make him one. I can call myself Chris Randall, but lord knows I don't have nearly enough piss and vinegar in me to make that one even remotely true. Then again, who does? ; )

I like this blog because it's about music (and music gear) and not politics. I recognize it's an election year and all, but can't you leave that stuff for the wingnuts in the political blogosphere (of which there is no shortage on either side) and keep this place pure in it's Rage Against The Musical Mediocrity Machine?

I don't comment very often (though I read daily), but that crack against Libertarians was enough to make my pleasantly inebriated ass stop composing my newest Grindcore opus, and break out the spell checker in order try to peck out some sort of cogent response. Hopefully I succeeded, but only tomorrow's unfortunate sobriety will tell me if I was anywhere on target.
