The Usual Monday Bullshit...

From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.

Because that’s how we roll.

Step 1: Adam is in Japan for the next two weeks. You can read about his trials and tribulations of the “Stranger In A Strange Land” variety on his blog. While he’s in Japan, it’s casual Friday here at Audio Damage for 16 days straight. I get to wear button down shirts and khakis instead of my normal formal suit. Which is nice, because that cummerbund can get damned uncomfortable while slouching in my office chair.

Step 2: The Next Product is about to have a user interface.

Step 3: I have to drive to Idaho (joy of joys) tomorrow. I’ll be back Wednesday. I can’t even Tweet in that Technological Wasteland. Every time I go there, it’s like stepping back to 1985. Where the hell did I leave my Compuserve password?

I guess that’s about it for the now. If anything interesting happens, you’ll be the first to know.

Why Idaho? I would love to go to one of these wastelands for a year, rent a room, and just make odd music and write, and come back a much odder but more fulfilled person. I am thinking about Eastern Oregon. . .

My mother lives on the Nez Perce reservation near Kamiah. I have to take a bunch of stuff from our last house up there because we don't have room to store it here.

My iPhone can't get any service, not even roaming of any sort, starting about 10 miles east of Lewiston. Beautiful country, but not if you want to, say, make a phone call.

If you want to know anything about Eastern Oregon, I'm your guy, though. I was raised there, and know pretty much everywhere east of the Cascades like the back of my hand, with the exception of the southeast corner of the state, which I've only visited a couple times. For true desolation, I recommend Christmas Valley.

If you score a potato around its middle then boil it, the skin just slips off into two even halves.

    Not that part of Idaho.

I think this thread might generate a record high number of hits.

This really is the kind of post I love. All you can hear is an eerie wind, whistling through the dusty tubes. . .

    WWII-era analog industries.

I'm sure the UI will be the shiz. Go to Idaho and be inspired.

Hey Chris, I can loan you my Tandy 200 laptop for the trip. Should be compatible with the local phone systems by now.

If you look at the last Idaho thread, someone closed it out by getting all pissy about how awesome Idaho was and how I lost a reader, and blah blah blah. He obviously didn't know that I had to spend four years of my otherwise splendid childhood in that miserable excuse for a state, because I didn't say so, or that I've had to drive from other more interesting parts of the country to spend time in the panhandle twice a year every year since then.

The biggest distinction of the bottom half of the state is that it is basically in the way of pretty much everywhere you'd actually want to go, if you're coming from pretty much anywhere else. But it does have Sun Valley, I guess.

In the spirit of admitting I'm wrong, though, I'll admit that there's a little piece of Idaho that isn't that bad, Lake Coeur D'Alene. My apologies. Of course, the other 214,632 km2 of the state is a raging shithole, but we can't overlook the nice parts.
