OOTO Open Thread...

From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.

It’s time for my yearly pilgrimage to the High Desert of central Oregon, so I’m going to be out of the office from Sunday morning until Tuesday afternoon. In that light, what we have here is an Official Open Thread. The subject will tentatively be the following:

What do you do to recharge your songwriting batteries? These yearly trips for me out to the complete and utter desolation of the Oregon/Nevada border completely bleach my mind, and when I come back I’m Full Of Techno™ for months to come.

I do realize that everyone has different methods, and it’s time to share. I won’t be chiming in on this thread at all, as I’ll be in a part of the state completely immune to the electromagnetic spectrum, so no cell phones, no internet, no Twitter, no Michael Jackson conspiracy theories. Just me and my Silvertone archtop and the sagebrush. So it’s up to you guys to make it interesting. You know the drill. Type at you when I get back.

Have a really, really good or a really, really, really bad relationship with a member of the opposite sex.

Or just catch the creative wave whenever it arrives.

    Go out jamming.

Listen to new music. Watch a movie and discuss it.

Take a holiday, walk a lot, eat, get plenty of rest and sleep and horizontal exercise.

    Avoid socializing with the inane.

Play a gig and actually listen to the others.

    Buy a new pedal.

Sometimes, I just sit down and bloody well write something regardless of how I feel, like a grown up. That's probably the best one for me...

The aeolian harp in our backyard has been an inspiration over the last five years for me.

I find listening to music makes me want to make music.

I'll just add on that muxtape is a great place to listen to stuff you've never heard before.

I can't really put a finger on what gets me going. Touring, and watching people doing stupid shit right in front of me, does set off an absolute flurry of ideas. New sounds help. Time away always helps. Competitive writing, if you can make believe there is such a thing, always gets me going as well.

Jamming, thinking about jamming, and/or listening to people jam just makes me want to quit doing music forever and ever.

Okay, this thread seems to have fallen flat on its face. Maybe that's because CR asked the same question not that long ago, as I recall.

@Dark Jk Lord: thanks for the free advertising. 'Fraid that you won't see either myself or CR joining up, however, since neither of us have Facebook accounts.

In an attempt to give people something to talk about in CR's absence (and I freely admit that I'm not as interesting as he is), I'll pose this query: is there yet a distribution of Linux that's viable for running a DAW? I don't mean running a few FOSS doo-dads, I mean working in a manner that's on a par with running Live/Logic/Cubase/DP/etc. on a Windows XP or OS X machine.

Be destructive and stay away from music. Come back in a few days..but whatever you do, no thoughts of vst.
