Hey, Look! A Video...

From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.

Well, that only took me all day which, given the content, turns to be a big fat waste of time on everybody’s part. I did learn some things, though, and they are, in no particular order:

1. Hardly anyone knows what the fuck they’re talking about on the Internet. I know, right? The four people that do know what they’re talking about don’t know anything about NLE rendering, so they’re no help.

2. Apple, who had got out of the doghouse for a while, are back to being on my Big List Of Shit. Why Final Cut Express, the which is based entirely on Quicktime, can’t load a Quicktime Screen Recording… well… I don’t even have the words. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

I could go on, but this will start to sound petty and childish, and frankly, I’m in a pretty good mood this morning, and I don’t want to ruin it. So there you go, an actual HD video of Tattoo drumming away. If you go to the YouTube site directly, you can watch it in HD, and almost read the knob labels.

I could COMPLETELY read the knob labels.

I plan to buy this when it comes out. I was disappointed you didn't give us any claps in the video, though...

Yep, add me to the Tattoo stalker list. AD filtering at its best, now with 100% more synthesis :-). Love that the mod sequencer follows you around as you click on parameters. Is there a way to change the waveform of the drum sounds?

NLE in general is one of those last frontiers that isn't straightforward for people who don't get off on video formats. Did anyone ever suggest Camtasia when you were looking for screencasting tools earlier? It's out for Mac now, and only $99. Works a treat. Or there's Jing, which does up to 5-minute clips, ranging from Free to $15.

Camtasia is awful on the PC. I can't see how it wouldn't be even more awful on the Mac. I just tried Screenflow out and was able to do a video about 10 times as good as that one in like 15 minutes, so I'll probably get that.

RE: the kickdrum, it has two waveforms. They are sine, and 9-Tri, which is a model of the triangle wave in the 909. You can hear me switch from 9-Tri to Sine in the very beginning of the video, at 7 seconds, if you listen close.

Those who can't do or teach, post on the internet.

Exciting demonstration. You guys have thought of EVERYTHING. Has an AD feel, for sure. I'm a feel guy.

Man, I am a dumb fucker. I wish someone would run a "Ableton Live For Dummies" course in DC. I have it, and I would really love it if it could be my main DAW. I find it aesthetically pleasing on screen. The *idea* of the program appeals to me greatly.

It makes me feel dumb, 'cause people always say how amazingly intuitive it is. But I open it up and I immediately think "OK... where do I start with this thing?"

This looks so good, the modulation looks very straightforward and direct. While it the UI has a pretty 'small & packed' look, I'm sure it works fine, once you get the hang of it. I think my MD is going to be collecting a fair amount of dust next year :-)

@beauty pill: the manual is pretty easy, and there are some good step-by-step tutorials included with Live. That said, it is a pretty 'deep' program, and there are lots of functions buried inside the UI, for better or worse. The amount of workarounds is pretty on the high side, and it won't get any better when we get bombarded with Max4Live patches in the future, but at least it has this flexibility.

The Ableton forum has - apart from the usual knobheads - also some very helpful and nice people if you ever have a particular question. So just shoot!

The people who know what they're talking about generally try really hard to avoid internet cockfights. If you go to a forum and there are a couple, or even one dominating asshole, the reasonable people will avoid it like the plague. So that means ninety-something % of websites are mostly useless for getting simple information quickly. I'm always amazed at how long it takes to find simple answers on the internet.

I've had Live since ver. 1 or 2, can't remember, but I stopped upgrading it at 4. I found it awesome for making loops, fucking up loops, that kind of thing. I have no idea how someone could use it to make all their music. I'm too much in the PT, DP, tape machine and console mindset.

Very nice. I've been following the development of this thing with great interest (only here, so I've happily missed out on whatever stupidity has been going on about it elsewhere), and this is the first chance to actually see it in action. The design is clear and intuitive, and it's capable of some very cool mod functions. I look forward to working with it firsthand. Hopefully the AU port isn't too much trouble!

Great work, guys -- as always.
