Been an exceedingly busy week here. As anyone that doesn't still live in their mom's basement knows, even a small unproblematic cross-city move entails many minor details. A large move, one involving a couple businesses and cats, over a couple thousand miles, exponentially increases the number of trips to the hardware store, grocery store, various home furnishing stores, etc. We also picked up a couple rooms we didn't have previously (dining room, guest bedroom) so we needed to get shit to put in them to make them fulfill their designated functions.

Anyhow, we're mostly almost entirely somewhat back to normal now, and Progress is being made on various Projects. Adam just purchased the 64-bit dev box that he needed, and Discord 3 has a UI, although it's still missing some key ingredients that would allow me to show it to you (mainly a big bit in the middle, but everything around the edges is done.)

Phoenix, aside from what appears to be a rather dismal local music scene, seems to be a pretty slick city, too. I don't want to say that the old saw "if you're bored, you're boring" applies, but I'm finding plenty of cool little shops and restaurants. They're a bit hard to see because they're always behind a Chili's or a Circle K, but they're here. I will say the following: if you like pawn shops or yard sales (and I very much do) then this city is made of pure motherfucking win. I have a feeling I'm going to be sending a lot of records up to PDX for Jeremy's shop.

(Brief commercial interlude: Jeremy, the other half of RT60, a band you've never heard but know a lot about, has a record store now. Go shop there. Anyhow, that's where we're at. I'll have a D3 UI to show off by the end of the weekend, but otherwise, science marches on.

Well to paraphrase Scoop Nisker - If you don't like the music scene, get out and make some of your own!

sorry I just couldn't resist

You're spot on about Phoenix. Lots of cool stuff and people here but they're hidden. It's like the first day at a new school, everybody just moved here.

Also nice, the infrastructure is all brand spanking new. Anywhere else I go I'm shocked by how used and run down everything is, even LA. And the local politics is amusing in an amateur hour sort of way.

I agree on all accounts. It's really strange to rock 70 on the highway and have almost no rumble, because the belt highways are all brand new. And, if big box stores are your thing, you're never more than about a mile and a half from a Costco or Super Target. (We have both within a mile of our house, among virtually every other big box chain.) "Convenient" is a word I'd use, if I was so inclined, which I'm not.

These big ass parks ("mountain preserves," in the local patois) are pretty sweet, too. I spent a nice morning at North Mountain Preserve the other day, which has like 35 miles of mountain biking single track. If you like that sort of thing, which I do, this city is set the fuck up for it.

All in all, I've got no complaints to speak of, other than the fact that people leave their fucking shopping carts pretty much everywhere but in the shopping cart thingie. That can get tedious.

How are the cats adjusting? A friend of mine moved a couple of years ago and his cats still can't figure out the new litterbox arrangement (or maybe they really dislike the new place).

Ours are fine. Pablo never missed a beat (he's motherfucking Pablo, after all) and the move didn't phase him in the slightest. Chica took the usual 2 days under the bed, but now she's same as she ever was. She's a bit older (pushing 8 now, whereas Pabs is just about to turn 3) so she's a little more of a curmudgeon about such things.

Better man than I, I'd have used those as a staging area for a few (fine, fine, a LOT OF) months rather than putting them immediately to use.

The way I looked at it, I got a live room and a rehearsal room, but I don't think I made my case clearly enough, as they now have a bed and a table, respectively.

You managed to find good a good pawn shop? I've lived in PHX since '86 and all I've ever found in pawn shops around here are beat-to-hell Chinese Mexi-Fender guitars and the occasional trashed POS effects processor I wouldn't even want for free if it weren't beat up. There used to be some cool music shops scattered around town that quite often had good used gear, but alas, they are all gone. But I suppose I'm only judging their value based on looking for music gear; they might be great otherwise. Then again, it's not like I was expecting to find a mint condition ARP 2600 for $200 in a pawn shop in the first place...

Phoenix, and AZ in general, is such a love it or hate kind of place. I just wish all the people who moved there and hate it would just freakin leave instead of bitching, as I'm probably headed back in the next couple years.

The parks and the freeways are fantastic, you nailed it. Now if you were expecting to walk anywhere, from anywhere, uh...No.

Yeah. "Right across the street" is a half a mile away, if you're talking about one strip mall to another. I've put more miles on my SUV in the last two weeks than I did in a year of living in PDX.
