The third in BeatServ's popular Dark Downtempo series of sample sets is now available for purchase [up in here.](http://www.beatserv.com/index.php/products/dark-downtempo-3.html/) As the poet once said, "let it flow. Let yourself go. Slow and low, that is the tempo." Of the three, this is the best one, IMO. Which isn't to knock the other two at all, of course.

Also too, Sonic Couture has a very nice release right around the corner. I've got a pre-release copy here, and it's gonna go over well with the synthy-nerds. James said it would be out by this weekend, but I just checked their site and it's not on there yet, and I'm not sure whether I'm supposed to say what it is or not. It rhymes with SchmovaSchmord, though.

Finally, I think we have this t-shirt shit figured out. I'm going to make a couple tiny changes to the artwork and such, but we're going to be looking at $20 per plus shipping, I believe. I'll put 'em up for pre-order when everything is sorted. We're going to have a minimum order, though, so we'll need a fair portion of people that previously _said_ they were on board with this whole Full Of Techno shirt concept to actually _be_ on board (325 or so when we did the vote on whether to do it or not a few months back.)

Seriously, how psyched were they when they thought of "BeatServ." How great is that name? Like, really great. That's how great.

I like the way those guys hear and shape tone. A nice combination of warmth and wrongness.

RE: the SchmovaSchmord, I'm excited. I didn't realize that SchmovaSchmords still existed today.

Where did they find it?!? Sampling one of those things must have been a painstaking journey. Don't they have a lot of tubes and filaments and stuff?

Also, they're powered by steam, right? Steam and poor, toiling British children with patches of charcoal on their skin that they got from all the toiling?

Sonic Couture: release the SchmovaSchmord now! Can't wait!

That earns a heartfelt +1LOL from me. I think the Schmovaschmord was actually built by toiling Chicago children, but I'm no historian. And really, one waif is pretty much like another when you get right down to it.

(Interesting side fact: my wife's grandmother worked on the assembly line where they were made. And "a lot of tubes and filaments and stuff" doesn't even begin to cover what goes on inside those boxes.)

Anyhow, maybe it's Memorial Day in England or something.

So not a sampled Wakeboard? Damn...

**rexlapin** (2010-05-31):

Schmovaschmord? Are you perhaps referring to this one:

Not SC, but very cool!

**Chris Randall** (2010-05-31):

SC is doing a (much more sophisticated) version. As I said, he told me it would be in their store this weekend.

Cool, I love the Hollow Sun one and will have to
check this out as well. Thanks for the heads up!
Cheers,

sc sampled this particular unit:

http://www.discretesynthesizers.com/nova/intro.htm

props to them and to phil who rebuilt it from the ground up.

it's a true gem of electronic music. scroll aaaaaaall the way down to hear the sounds it makes and realize this thing was built in 1940.

**Chris Randall** (2010-05-31):

Understand that I am in no way bagging on Hollow Sun; they made a fine product.

However, some points to consider:

1 - The SC one costs _way_ less. Again, I'm not entirely sure what I can and can't say here, but suffice to say it's significantly less.

2 - It is made for Kontakt 4 (and the K4 Player) and is an NI-blessed instrument, so it works with all the features that K4 provides, is authed through the Service Center, and shows up as a default library instrument as soon as it is installed.

3 - SC, I think most anyone who has experience with their products will agree, fucking PWNS the Kontakt scripting engine. This instrument benefits greatly from that; it also has a much more sophisticated user interface.

Anyhow, I'll leave it for you to decide. I don't own the Hollow Sun one so I can't speak to the quality of samples, but the Novachord isn't a terribly sophisticated instrument, sound-wise, so there's not a ton to sample. In looking at the files, there are waveforms here from every key, for every possible control configuration.

I was just going to say that about SC - their stuff is so .. uh, well - I'm in awe at the complexity of the work they do over there. If I needed an obscure instrument re-sampled to absolute perfection, they'd be who I'd get to do it.

>>Seriously, how psyched were they when they thought of "BeatServ."

I totally lifted it from "Techserve" in New York, a great Macintosh parts/repair store. I was the main guy at a small studio on 6th and 28th for 6+ years - so that means I spent most of my time waiting for someone to do Authorized Apple Repair service on our computers - instead of actually engineering.

**rexlapin** (2010-06-01):

I have most of the SC stuff as well as some of the Hollowsun
and it's all great (Devilfish OMG!). I also received an e-mail that
the Novachord is now available:
