Brian Eno - 2 Forms Of Anger (taken from Small Craft On A Milk Sea) by Warp Records

This is the first teaser from the upcoming Eno/Hopkins/Abraham album Small Craft On A Milk Sea. I’m not sure entirely what I was expecting, but it was either this sort of thing (sonically related to the backing music of the Karl Hyde/Eno colab on Athens, which is the same group of musicians) or something like the epic Leo Abrahams track Spider, the remixed version which is on the Chillout Lounge comps. (As an aside, that is one of my favorite pieces of music of all time. Production, flow, programming, and playing chops are all in fantastic display.)

Turns out it is very obviously the former. It’s nice to hear a well-made track in this vein that is outside the normal Genre Soup of electronic music. I tend to like the concept of Eno more than the execution, by and large, but this teaser bodes well for the upcoming album.

Only slightly related: the timeline comment track in Soundcloud embeds? Boycott that shit. It is intensely annoying to see what little Bobby Dokken from Weehauken thinks of any given transition. I mean, honestly, who gives a fuck?

I wish I could figure out how to turn that comment shit off all the time. Even when that shit is meaningful, I want to have to choose to see it. On any track made by someone even remotely famous, a track just becomes a muddle of pop-up sycophant bullshit. At least Myspace had the wherewithal to bury that shit at the bottom of the page.

I'm iffy on this Eno track, as with all things Eno post-1984. I don't dislike it, just not grabbed by it.

I like the track. A lot.

I couldn't agree more about how much the comment inserts suck balls. Seriously, when I spend all the time, thought and energy it takes to create a song, the very last thing I give fuckall about is what GothicPrincess666 or captainFIRST thinks about every minute detail...and what I could have done different, etc. Who needs that kind of distraction.

The ONLY people who should use the timeline comments are the creators of the track in question. And then, only in an instructional manner. Other than that, they blow in a big way.

Bobby Dokken from Weehauken, GothicPrincess666, and captainFIRST are seriously getting their feelings hurt in this thread.

I don't know why, but I thought an album called "Small Craft On A Milk Sea" would be placid, and I imagine that publishing this as a first track was designed to refute that notion with a big grin. Which I kind of think is badass. But that's just me.

In many respects, I am easily pleased.

@CR That Spider thing you linked to is pretty cool! Thanks for that!

The main question here is: Will boobs buy the $100 vinyl set?!?

If the answer is yes, that new AI button ain't gonna get used more than once or twice, I imagine.

Or maybe y'all is some LYING MOTHERFUCKERS.

Yeah, the original track ain't much to talk about, but that remix, which is on the Chillout Lounge box set, is fucking phenomenal.

The remix was done by Jon Hopkins, a Man About Town in the English electronic music scene.

His other stuff, I'm not too familiar with, but that track is the bomb.

this release is kind of a little coup for Warp who have lost my attention except for the Autechre releases and occassional single here or there.

i'm not much for $100 box sets. perhaps if this was FRESH material from Aphex (not "26 mixes for cash" ripped from random dat tapes) then i'd consider it. I'm sure it'll be a well put together release though. Warp tends to get the design side of things right and makes some nice vinyl pressings.

What the hell!?! Was it the "Warp has lost my attention" comment?

    Nobody's hittin' the button!

With the power to be with boobs comes the responsibility to be so sparingly.

I listened a second time to this Eno bit. I like a little better than I did the first time.

And now by day's end, the comments bar has become a little forest of stupid.

The comments on SC could be worse - go read some YouTube comments if you truly want to see the decline of humanity...

The comments are definitely not at a Youtube-level of civilization's end. They just bother me because a) the system isn't designed for meaningful discussion, everything is made so small that "Wow, good" is a more appropriate option for the space and b) they look like ass, especially when it's a big named performer, it all just becomes I-was-here graffiti tagging.

There needs to be a setting in your user profile where you can choose to by default not see the comments bar. Soundcloud has some issues with customization lately, I find. There's essentially no filtering for your dashboard feed. I'm interested in the music posted by people I follow, but I have no interest in their favouriting/commenting habits. Some people I follow, whose music I find interesting, favourite a dozen or more tracks a day. I'd like never to know that.

Graffiti's the right word. That weird need to graffiti is weird and sad to me.

I'll tell you how you keep the comments off your player: Make music that either no one particularly likes or is poorly made. Works like a charm for me.

I'll admit to leaving a few comments. I generally I try to do it at the 'end' of a track; if I like music I like to acknowledge that. Super uncool I know, but who doesn't like hearing that their music is appreciated, however ephemerally? But, indeed, when I go to listen to a track that has comments, the first thing I do is turn them off in the display. I'd rather just that it was on a collapsible thread at the bottom. The only person I care that reads it is person who posted it. So, I wouldn't have left one for Eno (or equivalent) because--see above.

shamann nailed this one. The social aspects of soundcloud could be very cool _if_ they better implemented. But I think we all agree that soundcloud needs to put a lot of their attention into improving their up-time.

I think the Eno thing is fantastic. Granted, I'm predisposed to like Eno--I think "Another Day on Earth" is a great record that holds up really well--but I wasn't expecting this. This sort of squall brings me back to a certain point in my life, and that it's Eno that helping create it makes me excited like a fanboy.

Thanks for the other background/links. The 'Spider' remix is on emusic if that helps anyone.

well, it's not that he Eno pushed himself to put together something meaningful with this track IMHO

Seems more like he had some time to spare and he did it just to see if people were going to buy the special package record

But, this track (dunno why) made me want to listen again to some Scorn tracks and I'm really digging them!
