And Another One...

From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.

I used a lens with a bit wider angle and deeper DOF for this one, so you could kinda see what’s going on. Less arty-farty, but a bit more informative, I suppose. Same general gear and workflow as the last one, except I added the Manta, MeeBlip, and CS5 to the mix, and got rid of a whole stack of pedals.

I think that’s it for me vis-a-vis sequencing entire songs with the CMU-800R. It’s fun and all, but quite tedious. I like the feel of the sequencer, but I’ve made a groove template for Live should I desire the same feel in the future.

enjoy the mood a lot in this one. pretty dark. dark = good.

I for one would totally like to get my hands on that groove template. I'm really liking the feel of the CMU. I'm really liking the feel of these last two videos actually. Very good stuff. I still want to hear what you could get out of a QY-70, though...

Dark friday night fun. I like it a lot.

I' d also like the groove temmplate, if you please. (I think you should've kept it a secret, tough)

I'm with boobs on this one.

And I third the motion for the groove template.

very cool, especially digging the rhythm and drum/perc sounds

whats the box next to the modular, aaand what voice was the meeblip?

  8. Chris Randall

The box next to the modular is the World's Greatest Effect, the Realistic Electronic Reverb. The MeeBlip voice is the one I'm playing live from the Manta, the "main" melody part.

What is it about self-oscillation on an echo machine that never gets old? Love it!

  11. beauty pill

@zombiestomper I think there is poetry in self-oscillation. It mimicks cognition. I could write a whole essay on this, but will spare everyone.

How long was Morgan Spurlock in your studio, and was it tough to teach him how to use your gear?

    that's funny!

That fucker looks like me, not the other way around. I'm 2 years older; therefore I got to MAWG status first.

But one tall, thin early 40s white guy looks pretty much like another, when you get down to it. Unless one uses some sort of genre specifier to identify oneself.

I see the eurocrack addiction starts to grow, I didn't see the Rene in the last video (maybe I missed it though).

So how long before you get one of the Cwejman compressors to go along with your modular?

  16. Chris Randall

That'll be a long, long time.

Would you consider MIDIfying the CMU?

    DONT...but really would you?

  18. Chris Randall

No. If I was going to go that route, I'd just use my complete sample set. The fun part is the software, not the sounds.

Hmm... Glasses in the first vid, no glasses in the second.

Do you have some trick to keep from stepping on your headphone cable? It seems like I do that just about every time I walk around while wearing 'phones.

"Do you have some trick to keep from stepping on your headphone cable?"

I'm guessing a couple decades of stepping over/around cables onstage will do it.

Killer stuff. Gahd-damn do I love that build-up/cut-off at the end.

    @Chris Randall

Since you say the best part about the CMU is the software, is there any possibility of a virtual instrument that mimics the best bits of the CMU? That could be cool.

  22. quantize

Why do i keep thinking of Jarre vs New Order?

  23. Chris Randall

@xmodz: God, no. While _I_ like making music this way, hardly anyone else does.

@quantize: no idea. I can't stand the former, and am only familiar with the club hits of the latter. Any similarity is purely coincidental, I assure you. I listen to Autechre, Neubauten, Tom Waits, Underworld, and a fairly lengthy list of older hip-hop and punk. And that's about it. I really don't like that pompous Synth-O-Rama shit that Jarre makes one bit.

    @ xmodz

do you like making music with a nail in your foot?..JK..

I been reading the blog long enough that CR gets a kick out of it... you might too ... and realize its the equivalent of eating peanut butter and tuna after the first 20 minutes...

all joking aside...if your into the sound... a kontakt pack and groove templates should be fine... and if its a CR kontakt pack ... shit is gonna sound crisp...ahem ahem...

  25. xmodz

    hah fair enough

  26. wgparham

@inteliko SampleHedz should totally put that out...

  27. quantize

tsk tsk Chris...i get the resistance to the pompousness of Jarre, but to not be a fan of early New Order (FACTUS 8 EP ...Temptation, Everythings Gone Green) when you are so tapped into Underworld comes as a shock!

  28. Chris Randall

Well, just because I own an SUV doesn't make me want a Model T.

You need to keep in mind that for roughly 10 years I spent every evening in a night club, either playing a show or working. In an alternative club, you are virtually 100% likely to hear either Blue Monday, Love Will Tear Us Apart, or both. While I appreciate the concept of New Order, if I never, ever heard another one of their songs, I'd be perfectly happy.

    -CR

  29. quantize

Ok well i won't push the point, but there's a lot more to New Order past the well known tunes.

Sounds like youre about to walk right off the canvas..just great

You guys should resurrect that delay Adam did for Mode
