I Almost An Office…

Getting very close to done with my new/improved workspace. The only thing I’m missing on the analog side is an 8-buss mixer, which I don’t currently own, so it’s not like I just haven’t plugged it in or something. The digital side is all in and working, though.

The shelf that all the synths are on is from Ikea, of all places. It’s probably the only thing they sell that isn’t made of pasteboard, that paragon of entropy. All lightly chromed steel, and it can easily take the weight. (I tested it by sitting and bouncing on the bigger shelf. It wasn’t happy about it, but it took the abuse.)

Anyhow, I’m almost ready to get back to making music. My next cycle of Micronaut releases will be DAW-free, as I mentioned earlier, and I’ve still got a bit of building to do; I also need to get a Hz/V convertor for the MS-20. But it’s definitely coming along.

I like the Quik-Lok Z-stand pressed into service as an auxiliary desk.

How 'bout a behringer mixer? You could call the next release "Quality through Shit".

Can anyone make out what modules are in the eurorack? I think I spot a tip top audio "smart" oscillator and I'm guessing the grid of gray knobs is either a z8000 or a doepfer fixed filter bank.

    Where gun rack?

That rug really ties the room together.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to highly recommend you make room for a second monitor on your desktop. Dual monitor setups are the boss, I would never go back to just one... Ableton live on one screen with plugin windows open on the other, etc.

    AT LAST! SOMEONE GOT IT!

Regarding the shelves, they are Ikea's "Broder" system. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/secondary_storage/10896/

I think the attaching to the wall bit is mandatory for our needs. Or, alternately, there's a flavor that can peg to the ceiling, which might be more appropriate. But the size, as you can see, is just the right depth for monosynths, and just the right width for the typical polysynths we deal with (DW8000, Juno 60, that sort of thing.)

It doesn't ring when there's weight on it, best I can tell, but as I said in a previous thread, I mix at a very low volume, so such things aren't really important to me. If I want loud, I do it with headphones.

Regarding the mixer, what I really want is the mixer that matches the tapedeck, just to make things simple, the TASCAM/TEAC Series 5, with the correct number of busses and such. However, I'll probably end up with a Fostex 812 or something else of that ilk, simply for convenience's sake.

@mitch: if you look at previous photos of my Office, you'll note I have two monitors in virtually every photo. I recently switched to a single big monitor, because I got tired of feeling like computer screens were taking over my entire field of vision. So, no, it's not "boss." It's weak.

As usual, I'll take this opportunity to point out that I don't really need workflow hints from anyone that isn't demonstrably more productive than me. ;-)

And by TEAC Series 5 in the comment above, I meant TASCAM M-308B, of course. That's the mixer that matches my deck. Not sure why I typed that.

Our service manager says he has a 308b buried in his garage, but it's tough to get to at the moment. He said they go for about $100 on eBay, but for a little more you can get something like an M2600. He recommended staying away from the 1500 and 2500 for reliability.

What are you leaning toward for a mixer?

I use the semi-famous Jerker desk from Ikea, which looked to be made to be an audio workstation desk. People actually have web pages about it.

I see you're going with my room treating theory of filling your studio room with metal objects and furniture. I can actually hear the metal ring when I turn up the volume, but I do have a whole high school gym locker in there. I have a metal resonator guitar that rings when you talk loud that hangs about 6 feet behind my head, but I had to finally hang a towel on it.

The only problem I see with your room is you've got way too much open room to move around without tripping on anything.

If I was gonna go as big as a 2600, I'd get a real console like a Ghost (no offense.) I kinda wanted to keep the whole thing compact.

I try to have as little metal in the studio as possible. I used to have a metal lamp that resonated. I tried all kinds of taped dampeners until it just had to go. Replaced with Tiffany-style deco lamps which are cooler anyway.

It will be fun to watch the large shelf become a big modular.

Maybe you've posted this before and I missed it, but I don't understand why you move and then subsequently have to re-set up everything you own- are you constantly evading a stalker? Or questing after the absolutely perfect house?

I haven't had much metal in the studio until recently. It turns out that a snare drum has a fair amount of resonance. However, my studio space is pretty horrendous on a lot of levels - windows that rattle, no ground wiring whatsoever, overhead lights that induce a huge amount of hum. Plus, it seems haunted. I worked down there a lot in 2007, and was pretty depressed by the end of the year - total "Yellow Wallpaper." I'd much rather work on my fairly ancient laptop in some place that has natural sunlight, even if I don't have an ideal desk.

So, what Ikea shelving unit are you using? It looks pretty decent for that role.

I use the Broder as well.

Not the best shot... camera phone. Nice set up you have. I really want an MS-20!

obviously he's gonna get a mackie 8 buss. CR loves mackie.

"It will be fun to watch the large shelf become a big modular."

    Muahahahah! Indeed.

The shelf looks like Broder to me. Had one once, wasn't too stable, swaying sideways even though all the screws were tightened. But, if mounted to a wall, it's sturdy enough to hold a lot of weight. IF it's mounted. Ikea's Omar series is a nice 3- and 4-oct synth shelf, by the way.

    I'm with boobs.
