Out Of The Orifice Open Thread...

Heading to L.A. in the morning. I’ve got a gallery show to go to before it closes, and on Saturday, a meeting of Close Talkers And Other Social Misfits Anonymous… errrr… I mean Trash_Audio Synth Meet 10. I will, of course, have photos on Saturday evening, but they’ll all be shallow depth-of-field shots of knobs and patch cables, so nothing you haven’t seen many times before. Fair warning on that.
Today I helped a friend move his studio. One of the things we moved was a CS-80. While I used to think it was cool, in retrospect I have decided that a CS-80 is only marginally less retarded than a CP-80B. At least a CP-80B comes apart. You have to move the CS-80 in one fell blow. I mean, I wouldn’t turn one down if someone handed it to me, but by the same token, it’d also be nice if they handed me several strapping young lads to shift it about.
Anyhow, this is an open thread. Anything and everything. You pick it.

I wish i could hit up the Trash Audio meet. Have fun. Scott Harvestman will be there.
i recall some old timer engineer telling me about ads from studios that said "CS80 -if you can haul it away you can have it"
this of course was around the time of that first DX7 digital nuttiness.. but i still don't know if i believe him.
The beginning of the end for Logic? http://www.macrumors.com/2011/09/07/apple-moving-toward-release-of-logic-pro-x/
Supposedly there is a Yammy Organ that has identical cs 80 guts and much cheaper and lighter.
New Steinberg controllers coming. Im thinking lil Midi knob boxes.
I'm with boobs.
@inteliko: Yeah, the Electone E-70. There are many strange and wonderful Yamaha organs, running the gamut from simple divide-down solid states on up to that CS-80 retooling and DX-5s in organ frames. Yamaha is such a huge company, if you're a fan it's not easy to keep track of everything they've done aside from the obvious.
I saw an E-70 go by on PHX CL a few months ago, but it got snatched before I could nab it. It was like $50. But they're very rare in America. I'm pretty sure it was a Japan-only release, and if you wanted one here, you had to special-order it.

Re: Logic -- Logic can suck it. Every time I've tried to use it, I gave up before I actually heard any sound. it was as frustrating as trying to use Linux for audio work. By the time you actually get it going, you've forgotten the idea you had. Plus -- Mac-Only? I understand why it's Mac only, but as a programmer I am convinced that writing and testing your program on all platforms makes the program better and saves money in the long run.
RE: CS80 -- my old friend Mike the mad Russian had his CS80 on the floor next to his bed and used it as a space heater. The thing sounded great but the UI on those takes a lot of getting used to. If I'm going to have a big-ass, heavy, goofy-to-program, insanely expensive synth, I'd rather have a DX-1. At least it doesn't go out of tune if you open a window.
I hope they do the whole FCX number on the new Logic, so we can all stop this ridiculous AU charade. Of course, you all knew I would say that.
Also: FL Studio coming to Mac, sorta.

I can state right here and now that our PC VSTs won't work in this context, and _do not_ write me asking about it.

FCX Logic == a fair number of existing AU plugins just won't work. CR has said as much before, but the "Audio Unit Standard" is "whatever runs in the most current version of Logic and OSX," all documentation by Apple to the contrary. Unlike Steinberg, who has the common decency to change their version number when they change their own standards (i.e. VST 2.3/2.4/3.0), Apple just keeps on calling it an Audio Unit standard. So a given AU will work in Live, and GarageBand, but not in Logic.
Fruity Loops always strikes me as what a DAW would be like if described by Yakov Smirnov.
I hadn't heard about FL Studio on the Mac. Cool. I'm pretty happy with FL Studio for my normal workflow. I have Live but I've just not been motivated to put the time in to make the switch.
Of course if I can't use all my favorite plugs (AD and otherwise) on it, that will severely limit its usability. But it might be worth getting so I can noodle about when traveling with my MacBook Air...
Stupid fucking pick arm issues in my SX-70! Grr... Anger...
Just needed to vent. I'm a little better now...

Re: Logic > I think (hope!) this speculation might end up more along the lines of reality. I want to believe that the remainder of the core Emagic team will be allowed to keep pros mostly happy, because it is not like Apple is not making any money of that segment even if it is dwarfed by iOS. We shall see.

I've got a good comment and a bad comment, which do you want first? The bad, ok. I hate to say this 'round these parts, but I fired up Logic this past weekend just for shits and giggles and I was really inspired by how easily I got around and was able to do what I wanted. I had not used it for years aside from basically using it like a giant Pro Tools plugin on my laptop to bounce audio through AD plugins and then shut it off. It's far from perfect, I know, I'm just saying it inspired me for the moment and it's making me want to make more music, just saying. That is all.
Now for the good, did anyone catch that new Moog iPad teaser yet? Certainly intriguing.

Speaking of the iPad, there's a new sampling app from Smule, MadPad:
http://www.smule.com/madpad
Looks like a simple MPC-type interface, except still images of the videos you use for the samples take the place of the pads. Hit a pad, and the video plays back. Totally simple idea, in the sense that it is immediately obvious once you see it in action, but I haven't seen this sort of thing before.
So ok I'm not a coder just a keyboard player so go easy , but as far as the whole vst vs audio unit deal goes and I may be wrong , but it is my understanding that AU allows access to core audio/midi and vst relies on asio ....if that is the case I would rather fly the AU flag as I can use lots of class compliant devices within AU hosts without crap assed drivers ( not to mention my iPad ) so in that aspect I hope AU lives on , but I understand anger from devs . As to users ..... Wait to upgrade ... Duh .
You need an iPad2 (the one with a camera) for that to work, right?

Nope Just iOS 4.2 or later and maybe a powered hub in some cases .
logic works fine for me but there are a lot of things i wish it did that it does. it's still got some unintuitive strings that need pulling. it could be made more Logical :) smoother/faster to get from one thing to another especially where automation and routing are concerned. but i think it sounds good. kill me i you want but my mixes always sound better logic than in live. piling up a lot of tracks in live makes it kind of go poo.
heck of a time to lose power. our infrastructure is the goodest.

@DBM but how would this work without a camera?
@DBM: Don't take this the wrong way, but I don't think you fully understand how this whole shindig works.
The host talks to the audio system, be it CoreAudio or ASIO. The plug-in talks to the host. The plug-in _never_ talks to the audio system directly, no matter what format it is. The plug-in gets its audio from the host, and gives it back to the host. Whatever the host does with that after the fact isn't the plug-in's business.
Hosts that can handle VST plugs are in no way required to use ASIO. Have a gander at Live, for a simple example.

@ meeglosh - Couldn't agree more.
I think it is natural that people here come at this from different vantage points. Just being someone who makes music, I'm not hugely interested in what goes into making it all work, as long as it does, allowing for an 'acceptable' level of crashes, etc. If I feel I have to learn something about what makes something tick, I will, but only if it is directly related to improving my musical output. However, in this forum I find it entertaining to read the words of people who do, and perhaps have to, care and know much more than I about how everything works.
@ CR ... non taken , hell I said as much . I think my recollections on the asio /vst ( as I thought ) dependency came from an old EM : sound card, plugin, computer round up from about ....shit maybe 10 years back . I just remember the line " vst's running on the asio engine " and as far as Live goes .... I have/had no idea what is going on under the hood and as far as I knew the had some kind of virtual Asio to Core Audio bridge ?
.... Cool thanks for schooling me . I do love to learn ..... as long as it isn't written by they guys who write the DAW manuals ( what is the emotive con for self laceration )
BTW have you done any mods to your Monotribe yet ?
i'mmm with meeglosh
Speak of the devil... I've been using EQuick and Compassion a lot today and I'm totally enjoying myself. The VU graphic in EQuick is such a time-saver for me. Mixing and mastering is my least favorite part of the process and those plug-ins make it a bit less painful and more fun. Nice work!
Sorry, for some reason I thought DBM was Dave Gamble... please ignore the "speak of the devil" part. I we Todd did.
I'm with boobs.
