Here's a [Flickr set](http://www.flickr.com/photos/chrisrandall/sets/72157627521604037/with/6136821034/) with some pics from the LA T\_A meet on Saturday. It was necessarily Euro-Centric, so most of the pictures are the usual cast of characters. Of note, if that sort of thing interests you, were the new 808 foot module from TipTop, and Harvestman's Polivoks oscillator, both of which I'll be getting. I'm not familiar enough with that scene to know what was earth-shattering or whatever. That Buchla was really pretty. I'll say that much.

There was a DSI Tempest in attendance, but I was up on the roof socializing, and didn't fondle it. Otherwise, a whole lotta patch cables. Heading back to PHX in a couple hours, then a busy, busy week ahead. I have to turn in the RC of this iOS app I've been working on, I have at least one sound-alike contract due, and somewhere in there we're gonna try and finish off Filterstation. Should be interesting. I'll need another vacation in a week or two.

Awesome, did anything get swiped ?

**seancostello** (2011-09-11):

"finish off Filterstation."

Two questions about the photos:

- Is the Buchla one of the new ones, or one of the old 200 series?

- The ARP-looking thing at the end - whatisit?

**boobs** (2011-09-11):

that's an older buchla 200 not the 200e.

but does look like it could have a couple newer modules or cloned 3rd party modules.. i don't know much about the buchla stuff though.

**renderful** (2011-09-11):

@seancostello The Arp-ish synth at the end looks like a Macbeth to me, but I'm not entirely sure.

**Chris Randall** (2011-09-12):

That's a MacBeth M5, the King of modern synths. It is huge. And made of plate steel. Very Scottish.

**boobs** (2011-09-12):

Macbeth is a wizard. amazing modules. classy. well built. beautiful sound.

**inteliko** (2011-09-12):

I'd go next year and pull the fire alarm to walk out with something but it'd probably be mistaken for a new module.

**cilwar** (2011-09-12):

@CR

I'd be interested in hearing what particular aspect of the new Polivoks oscillator that makes it a must have for you.

Also re the Tiptop 808 drum module; is there some foot controller element to it?

**DBM** (2011-09-12):

@ CR. Do you have the Polyvolks filter module ?

**Chris Randall** (2011-09-12):

@cilwar: The oscillator just sounds like 33 kinds of awesome. As far as "foot controller element," no. I, like most people that learned how to make electronic music from original Chicago house guys, call the kick drum the "foot."

@DBM: no, I do not. However one is ostensibly on the way, per a conversation I had with Scott on Saturday.

If you're not following CR's Twitter feed:

Minimalism for the fucking win.

**boobs** (2011-09-13):

polyvolks filter is nice. it's the only filter i've heard that can do sherman filterbank-like res. it does a really beautiful kind of dirty.

**DBM** (2011-09-13):

@ CR ... officially Green with envy . When you get it what ever you do dont drive the MS20 filter through it as your headphones will melt in to your ears !

**DBM** (2011-09-13):

So what kind/type of Filters do we have in filter station ?

Anything esoteric ?

**Chris Randall** (2011-09-14):

I'll talk about it at length in a blog post tomorrow. It definitely has some fun shit in it that isn't in any of our other products.

-CR

**DBM** (2011-09-14):

@CR ..... anticipating

**seancostello** (2011-09-14):

Looking at the screenshot, "LP20" certainly suggests the low pass filter from the MS20. 914 BP is probably a single band from the AD 914 thing. Those two aren't commonly found as swept filters. Want.

**renderful** (2011-09-14):

Yeah, I've been waiting for Cytomic - The Drop, but I will certainly buy this one first.

**DBM** (2011-09-14):

Maybe the polyvolks will find it's way to the modeling lab in a later update ?

He'll it would be sweat to make it an ever expanding filter?

Also anyone here a Mach 5 user ? Seams they just did an update and added the monstrous xpander/matrix 12 filter bank ! The only synth no one has ever emulated that I wish they would :?

**DBM** (2011-09-14):

Damn T9 ....

**studio nebula** (2011-09-14):

@DBM: Many years ago I bought all of the parts necessary to build a Polivoks filter, mostly on CR's urging. Somehow I never got around to building it. Maybe now I have a new reason.

the Xpander filter isn't a "bank" as such. It's a single four-pole filter with a bunch of internal switches so that it can produce a bunch of combinations of 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-pole high-, low-, and band-pass responses. There are also some more unusual configurations, e.g. my favorite (from when I owned an Xpander) was a combo 3-pole LP + 1-pole phase-shift configuration. People have reproduced it in hardware, at least; see http://m.bareille.free.fr/modular1/vcf_multimode/extrapole.htm for example.

The filter is easily the most interesting part of that synth. I didn't care much for it otherwise (which is why I no longer have it). Emulating it would necessarily involve modeling some of the flabbiest envelope generators ever constructed. ;-)

**DBM** (2011-09-14):

@ Adam; yeah the multitude of types of filters is a BIG part of that synth .... I could see leaving out the eg's or at least improving them .
