A Little Improv...

From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.

As much as I was tempted to bust out in to high-speed Tyner-esque runs (a fellow lefty, and that’s how we do) I managed to hold myself back. Since there will be an inevitable question, I’ll go ahead and say now that the CP-80B is running through the TimeFactor and Space, and the Space is set to its Shimmer algorithm. These are the only effects on the piano. (I’m using Ableton Live as a mixer in this context, and Eos and Dr. Device are the sends, but neither of them are on the piano.)

Anyhow, sequenced by Phaedra, as is proper for music like this.

I never cared for the cp , before this ( at least not a cp I recognized ) There for all I can say is ... Nice !

Very cool music, programming, sound design and haircut.

@DBM: The songs it is well known from in the late 70s and early 80s all had every knob dimed, it seems, so that brash middy pseudo-piano is kind of what people think a CP70 or CP80 sounds like. But it has a pretty broad range of tone colors, never mind the fact that it really loves pedals.

I've already bought a few of your plugins and started a Euro system as a result of your videos. I really don't have room for a CP80 in my apartment. PLEASE STOP!

I'm a sucker for CP-pianos and tape delay, so I'm all over this stuff. Very nice, Chris!

Very nice! Kinda Vangelis (in the good way, not the bad way, so don't take offense). I have always wanted a CP80. It's one of my white whale bits of kit. I do have an ultra rare Rhodes Mk V that I got for an absolute song that I use for things like this. But I do so still have my heart set on a CP80! I haven't got Phaedra yet (mainly because the iPad in the house belongs to the wife), but I'm really digging the design. I can see how it would fit into my workflow very easily. My music partner is leaning on me to get an iO dock and to do more with the iPad stuff. This video is not going to get him off of my back!

Always loved the CP, with a good modulated reverb it has this dreamy quality (especially in the tails) I haven't heard from any other EP. This clip has me wanting one again... not a good thing around year end time :)

How anyone could not want a CP after watching this is utterly beyond me.

i thoroughly enjoyed this piece. every tasteful, hypnotic, selective bit of it. when i finally got my cp70 up my 3 flights of stairs, i knew i wasn't moving for awhile. so worth it to have at least one instrument one can just sit at and play. and thanks for the hall & oates. there goes my afternoon. it's now officially a cp-monday! simple minds or gabriel up next...

@CR . Yeah I think it's that typical " bright " sound that has always left me feeling "uhg" and it would seam every sample library I have ever had that had a cp was in that category ...of course adding a filter or what ever would mud it up to my liking much more , but then again it's always just been more immediate to load a nice grungy roads or dark old piano to get what I'm after . Still I like the CP ergonomics as a work station ;)

Sounds great... and that outro... fiyyyah.

@DBM: The magic one is a CP-80 BM. I have the B model, and dearly wish it was a BM. The BM has MIDI out. Win. Although a Moog Pianobar would fit on an 80 B.

This piece is super cool. And just like everybody else, I want a CP80 now. Is this the "Red Rain" piano? Sounds like it.

I'm going to admit that I don't fully understand what Phaedra is, but that's largely 'cause I'm frantically trying to complete an album that will be released as a surround-sound installation in a museum in two weeks. So my brain is full.

I'm sure I'll grasp it in January, when this work is over and I can start thinking about other stuff.

Yeah, it's the Red Rain piano, along with a lot of other PG stuff. It was kind of his signature piano sound for a while.
