And The Hits Just Keep On Comin'...
From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.
Just put away another 64-bit update, this time to Automaton. Every platform is now 32/64, and there are some minor bug fixes, stuff you probably wouldn’t have noticed anyhow, but will definitely not notice now.
Free update, in the store now; if you’re an owner, go grab v1.1.0, and don’t say we never gave you anything.
In entirely unrelated news, to add insult to injury I seem to have gotten the Mother Of All Colds. Or a fairly mild flu, possibly. So I am once again bedridden. This has given me plenty of time to just sit and think, time I would normally spend doing shit without thinking about it, so everyone is probably better off.
One of the things I thought about today was as follows: the vast majority of AI readers are musicians with the ability to output some interesting music. I am pondering the idea of doing an AI compilation album. Now, when I say “album” I mentally picture an actual vinyl record, but there’s no way I could afford to have such a thing made myself. (Believe me, I’ve been trying for years now.) But if we all threw in… well, something to consider anyhow. Is there interest for such a thing? It would be for a suitable charity, of course, not a cash-generating enterprise.

Sounds like a great idea, if enough of us feel the same way, it might be enough to actually pay for it.
Have a save New Year CR and get better so you can keep making cool shit for us to drool over...
I'd submit a track. I'd still love to have a chance of being included in a compilation even if it was just a digital offering, but this is probably the last chance I'll have to ever get something on vinyl, so I'd be willing to pitch in for that too.
I'm sure you know by now, but I'm pretty sure Valley Fever never goes away and can reoccur. At least that's what I'm blaming a lifetime of laziness on.

P.S. Yes, I'd participate in that project.
Sounds interesting. What is the framework? Only AD plugins? Using only presets? No one can use Logic? :)...
Is it a free for all or is it the selected best 10 tracks?
I enjoy artistic frameworks and a deadline is always helpful.
Vinyl is lovely, but physical things and money, it's an organisational pain. Use these freely flowing electrons.
I'd love to be part of a comp, especially if it's on vinyl.
Great idea ! I'm willing to chip in and submit !
Let me rephrase that not being a guest (sudden log out)... Great idea ! i'm willing to chip in and submit !
Awesome idea !! I would love to submit a track and would be prepared to chip in too... of course every track would need to incorporate an AI product somewhere ... nice cross promo plot :-)
That sounds like a good idea. I would love to submit a track.
I have noticed over time that when you are ill, you tend to get rather philosophical and John-Lennon-y.
A compilation, whether it's on vinyl or any other medium, sounds awesome. Or better yet, throwing tracks at each other could be a factor, perhaps? Make it more of a collaboration. I second the motion that every track would need to incorporate AD products :).
I think an AI comp would be amazing; I'd also be willing to chip in both material and the monies.
I also think the limitation of only using AD plugs for all processing/sound generation could be rather interesting.
I'm in, if you're not afraid of some serious porn-jazz.

AI comp would be fun. you would obviously have to be the 'curator' of the release or come up with some clever voting/poll for people to vote on which tracks got included on any physical release... then maybe the digital version could have all the other tracks that wouldn't fit on a record. but perhaps your hatred of design by committee should override that and you should be "the decider"
anyway - i think it's a fun idea to kick around and think some more about while you smack down the flu, sick, health funk you're in.
feel better btw. maybe this means you are getting rid of all your sick for the next year or so.. getting it all at once.
when i moved from east coast to west coast 15+ years ago i got the mother of all flu bugs... but thankfully no desert fever.
they need to invent a neti pot for the immune system.. a whole body douche or something.
I'm in, with moneys and music. How will quality control work?
i'm prepared to submit a track called body douche, thanks boobs
:#
Whole Body Douche really should be the name of an indie hipster band. If it isn't already.
The reason I get like that is that I usually work on 5 or 6 different things throughout any given day. When I'm under the weather, my loving and forbearing wife turns in to Torquemada, and makes me stay in bed. As a result, I can only do stuff I can do on a laptop. Like post lengthy rants in 140-character bursts on Twitter and come up with whacky ideas like this.
In any event, I think limiting it to Audio Damage products would be, while intriguing from a strictly capitalist viewpoint, not exactly in the spirit of the thing. If it was going to be on vinyl, it necessarily needs to be limited to 10 tracks, so some A&R would need to take place. I don't like to have a "vote" on something like that, as you just end up with a list that offends the smallest group of people, so some other mechanism, perhaps a group of Elite Analog Industries members like boobs, shamann, Chad (Beauty Pill) and myself could sort it or something.
The actual mechanism of manufacturing and shipping a record is pretty well-worn territory, and one I know well, so that's no problem. So here's what I propose:
1. A paradigm for track submission is agreed upon (general genre so it isn't too scatterbrained).
2. Of the submissions, 20 make the grade and go to a Bandcamp release. Any income from the Bandcamp page goes to a charity we vote on.
3. Of those 20, ten get to be on the vinyl. Those ten have to agree as to how to pay for the vinyl. First in, first out on the vinyl's proceeds, of course. Anything remaining goes to the same charity.
This seems to be the simplest mechanism for pulling this off, and the vinyl aspect isn't a deal-breaker.
Another way to do it would be the old-fashioned way. I just A&R all the releases, pick the ten I like, pay for vinyl to be made, then do it via Bandcamp where you can just buy the digital release for whatever, or buy the vinyl. Anything past the pressing itself goes to charity. This is far simpler, but less community-oriented.
And the third option would be for one of the many record-label operators that read this site to contact me and say "hey, I can pull this off" and we can do it through them, with a similar A&R process. This would obviously result in a smaller charity donation, because the record label would need a little something to grease the skids. But it'd be a path of less resistance.
Discuss.

Sounds like a cool idea and I would be up for putting a track forward. Plus I can help out with PR in the UK and some of Europe.
i'd be willing to help any way i could and let the scope of the project and evolution of the process sort of naturally determine my part in it if i'm needed :)
currently, i don't think i could 'take the lead' on something like this but that could change depending on how various projects come together this year.
i think it's rather obvious that an AI branded comp for charity would have CR as the person who directs and delegates and shapes the thing.
also, i think first step would be deciding on a general genre and getting a bunch of tracks in the works and then see how they shape up and if they fulfill the initial inspiration
I'm of the opinion that "experimental electronic" should cover a multitude of musical sins. That describes the vast majority of the readership's output, in any event.

Hey Chris,
first of all: get better soon! And have a good new year.
I'd love to submit a track for a compilation, perhaps a version of this track (entirely done with AD plugs ;)) - http://soundcloud.com/bitmud_com/bitmud-hoerschaden
About the vinyl: do you have a company for doing it? We released some tracks on a 10" in 2000 and the company is still in business. The company resides in the Czech Republic and the quality of their products was great. I just found their website: http://www.gzcd.cz/vinyl-27/
Great idea! I'd submit and chip in...if it went well, maybe it can even turn into an annual AD 'volume x' type thing?
I'm in, great idea. Choose the tracks in whatever way you'd like, this is not about personal gratification.
I wouldn't limit it by posting some kind of "genre", however. I already loathe most genre names, but "experimental" really is the uncrowned king of the midden heap. Blech.
