Leaving for NAMM in an hour or two. L.A. is a five-hour drive on what is both the most boring and most exciting highway in America. Boring because it is essentially a straight line all the way there, and the only visual stimuli are dirt and the occasional rock; exciting because you could easily get crushed by a tractor-trailer driven by a methed-out redneck talking on his cell phone, so you drive in this constant state of near-catatonic boredom, with occasional doses of adrenalin red-line.

Anyhow, needless to say, I'll be hard to get ahold of for the next 5 days. There is no wi-fi worth the name at the Anaheim convention center, so my "live" updates and pithy comments will be made chiefly via my [Twatstream](https://twitter.com/#!/Chris_Randall). If there is some piece of gear you'd specifically like information about, and if it isn't too physically taxing to find this information (keep in mind that I am still somewhat handicapped in the locomotion department) then I'll be happy to hunt it up for you. Let me know in this thread, or if I'm actually at the show via Twitter.

And the first person that says anything about my fucking cane except "hey, nice cane!" is getting beat with same. Soundly. Anyhow, this is an open thread. Subject is NAMGLA.

Nord drum please! What it is and why!

Thanks

**bongo_x** (2012-01-18):

I'd actually like to see a picture of the cane in question. In the future I will base all my judgements about your taste on the style and functionality of said cane.

**boobs** (2012-01-18):

@lazenbleep - nord drum is a drum brain with 4 trigger inputs and ONE audio output.

just saw a youtube for an Arturia analog synth. actual hardware analog synth. who knew?

safe travels and may you not encounter too many keytards.

**synthetic** (2012-01-18):

You have to catch me first, gimpy.

**snk** (2012-01-18):

The Arturia synth is no joke, it is made by Yves Usson, of Yusynth's fame.

Some nice features, a fair price tag...

**rollmottle** (2012-01-18):

Pix and yer impressions of the new TipTopAudio PolyVCO Euro module would be rad.

**DBM** (2012-01-18):

Hey I posted on twitface , but just incase You should look at the new Akai (WTF) Max49 controller ( if there is a physical one yet ) Looks smart - pads with note repete , keys with aftertouch , arp , step seq , Tempest style touch strips , midi Din , usb , and CV gate pitch , etc. ?????

every time this company does something stupid , they turn around and do something like this that seams like a of course moment . Anyway have fun at Namm .

BTW Looks like Behringer's iX3242USB might be the missing link that "VST iOS Guy " was talking about with the large input count

**MikeF** (2012-01-18):

Nord drum is a virtual analog drum synth in a box. More info here: http://www.musicradar.com/news/drums/namm-2012-nord-drum-photos-and-info-released-524610

**Basement Dweller** (2012-01-19):

Before introducing Pitt's film, Moneyball, Clooney held up the cane and said, "I have to give it back to him. He can't make it to the bar otherwise."

**bongo_x** (2012-01-19):

I was kind of curious about the Max49 too, but I don't keep up with all the new stuff so I wasn't sure how much it was different from the MPK49.

**Chris Randall** (2012-01-19):

Cheap Chinese MIDI Controller + CV/Gate outputs still equals Cheap Chinese MIDI Controller. You can dig through your crayon box until you find the color named "Don't Give A Fuck" and use that one.

**DBM** (2012-01-19):

Awww come on . I there are plenty of reasons to bitch at/about akai , but the MPK series is fairly decent It's been my workhorse midi master since new and I gave up my cheap Japanese ( key bed was yuk ) Korg Kontrol 49 for it .

Some people hate it , but I like the keybed on these feels kinda like the Access Virus KB keybed and I loved those ;)

**DBM** (2012-01-19):

Evidently my typos are the spirit of a Pirate , I .

**Chris Randall** (2012-01-19):

@DBM: I suppose. To each his own. I'll play with it at NAMM. My benchmark keybed is the Kurzweil 250 / MIDIBoard. Everything else feels cheap as hell.

-CR

**DBM** (2012-01-19):

@CR : I , may the boobs be with you .

**DBM** (2012-01-19):

@ CR , BTW If you see the Monster Cable people there , give em' the finger for me and tell them I wont buy there shitty cables of Craigslist if they were new let alone used .

Thanks .

**analogcre8or** (2012-01-19):

For some reason, I've always been partial to Yamaha key action. I've been pounding the shit out of my Motif 7 for around 10 years now and it's held up beautifully. A friend has the 250 MIDIBoard though, and I've always wanted one...like new. Fat chance now. I think the Akai looks interesting, feature wise, but I'm sure it feels like cheap, Chinese, lead spiked plastic. I guess I'll find out tomorrow. Then again, what doesn't these days... If it serves a purpose, and I can beat it to pieces in various hotel rooms over a year... I've got no problems with that. It doesn't need to be a keepsake like, say, my OP-1.

**boobs** (2012-01-19):

stop shitting in my ears!!!

**obscurerobot** (2012-01-19):

Kemper Profiling Amp: Can it be abused in interesting ways, or is it just a really expensive and sophisticated amp modeler?

**Duke Fame** (2012-01-19):

Best synth-action keybed EVER: Kawai K5000.

You'll have to pry my K5000S that I purchased new in the late 90's from my cold dead goddamn fingers, and even then you'll face an unwelcome struggle as I'll be channeling my unholy energies from above (below).

**takokichi** (2012-01-20):

@v8media - I don't know if they are at the NAMM, but Griffin Technology just released a competing thingy:

http://store.griffintechnology.com/studioconnect

**Chris Randall** (2012-01-20):

TASCAM announced an I/O dongle as well, 'tis here:

http://tascam.com/product/iu2/

Pretty nifty.

-CR

**v8media** (2012-01-20):

Looks like maybe no power on the Griffin one? The Tascam looks interesting, but maybe awkward? Part of why I was thinking the IODock is that it does it's job without making things unwieldy, plus power's good if I end up using this thing mostly for music.

Since a few of these interfaces support stereo or multiple mono inputs now, can anyone give input on which programs support this, and how? Are there input menus if programs see more than one input?
