unsuspected sounds Now Available…

The long-awaited day has come. I was waiting until the jackets arrived, so that I knew the most time-consuming part of the process wouldn’t have to be repeated. They just showed up today, and look fantastic. So I’ve made the unsuspected sounds page at BandCamp live, and you can listen to and purchase the album, in either digital or vinyl + digital forms.

All net proceeds will be donated directly to the Breast Assured Foundation of Tucson, so here’s your opportunity to show you’re with boobs, and hook them up. They do very good work taking their mobile labs to poor neighborhoods and providing free screening for breast cancer. Plus they have just about the best name of any charity group ever.

The vinyl will arrive on 5/5, and barring any unforeseen circumstances, I expect to have all orders shipped by 5/10. If the temperature has climbed too high here in Phoenix, I may pick up the vinyl in California and drive it back here, rather than relying on the good graces of UPS. (Their brown trucks get very hot here. I’ve received packages in Autumn I couldn’t even pick up they were so hot. This wouldn’t be good for vinyl.)

Anyhow, pay what you want, minimum $5 for the digital, $15 for the album. Go forth!

    Vinyl and mp3 bought! Thanks.

  2. neB

    Yes! Good jerb, Chris!

  3. Duke Fame

Fantastic job musicians, and to CR for the production work. Well, well done!

I can tell I will be listening to this one a lot after the sun is down.

Congratulations and thanks for bringing together and curating all this talent, distributing it in a beautiful package, and all for a great cause no less. Four tracks in and I'm hooked. Love the vibe. Just picked up the digital version, and am looking forward to hearing the rest.

  5. R.A.W.

Thanks again for the great work, Chris!

I'm really looking forward to the vinyl. :D

I'm so pleased with this record I've nearly peed myself a couple times, it must be said. Everyone involved are total champs; I wish I could have afforded to do a double album set, but I maxed my credit card just doing this one.

I think, the way things are going, we can do this again, though.

Very cool album, all the tracks really kick ass. I especially like how the Bitmud track starts out slow and kicks in half way through.

  8. huggie

This was a nice thing to wake up to this morning! I feel very honored to be on a compilation with such fantastic artist.

The fact that it is also on Vinyl makes me oh so happy!

    Thanks Chris!

    I love the cover art.

  10. RGiskard

Hey, digital download sooner than expected! Thank you!

  11. bongo_x

I started listening to a few seconds to check it out, and then stopped myself and said "do it for the boobs". I'm sure it's great just because of all involved, and anyways it's a no lose deal.

As of a few moments ago, this is the #4 album on all of Bandcamp. Thanks, all!

Great cover art. Amazing project. Superlative superlative.

Thank you Chris and all of the artists. This is incredible, forward music. I'd have peed myself too.

  14. Walt Spagnoli

Listened to the first two tracks and instantly bought the vinyl/download package. The Goldbaby track is innovative to say the least. And the monster drum fill in the middle of the Bitmud track. Wow! This music is more inspiring than any commercial release I've picked up recently. And it's for a good cause as well. Well done!

  15. Chris Randall

I assembled and laid out the art, but the actual piece was generated from the audio waveform of the album by a bit of code that Stefan Goodchild (who made the Electronic Music Masters t-shirt artwork) wrote. It is available here:

DAMMIT!!!! I'm trying to order the vinyl and PP is asking to confirm my bank account because I'm 100 miles from home and they want to call me. I HAVE NO PHONE SERVICE HERE!!!

  17. ungeheier

Saw your tweet CR, listened to the first 20 seconds of the first track, ordered Vinyl copy, sent $20 instead of $15, came here to see that $ is going towards boobs and that made me feel even better...

Love the boobs. Just ask my wife. ;)

Thanks for doing this. I haven't been around the 'net much due to a ton of work BS so I haven't followed everything with this project, but the bits and pieces i saw about it seemed really cool.

Thanks CR, and all of those involved.

  18. Wade Alin

Hey, I have an awesome idea - you should start a label!!

Seriously, great work man, putting this together and it's all so strong conceptually.

  19. darklordjames

And with that comment, Wade wins this thread.

  20. DGillespie

Nice, I can't wait to go pick this up.

  21. analogcre8or

@CR - It's tempting to buy the stock just to prove you wrong once, but then I'd have to sell all the CDs in MY garage to finance it! Think not. You're right. Still, congrats on the pace of sales!

  22. renderful

So inspired to make music every time I listen to even a piece of any track on here.

  23. tenderosa

Terrific work all involved. And nice track sequencing.

  24. pepezabala

The normal boobs ( . )( . ), the silicone boobs ( + )( + ), the perfect boobs (o)(o) Some boobs are cold (^)(^), and some boobs belong to grandmothers ././ And let's not forget the very large boobs (o Y o), and very small boobs (.)(.), and lastly the asymmetrical boobs (•)(.). We love them all!. Post this message on your wall and say ┌П┐(◉_◉)┌П┐ to breast cancer. Save the boobies!

  25. pepezabala

this compilation made me go nuts on bandcamp, bought it, and then also bought another couple of releases from bands that I know. thank you!

  26. monte

My first experience listening to this album is going to be when the vinyl arrives. Looking forward to it!

  27. boobs

nicely done CR. just got back to the internet and suitable listening environs. very clean design.

    cheers. hazzah etc.

  28. Cutter Filtoff

I love the Goldbaby track. Really cool to hear how Hugo uses his sound design prowess in context.

  29. Vaihe

I'm with boobs so bought the vinyl. So far Bitmud is my favorite track.

  30. Solipsist Nation

I'm on the second listen through, and while I usually give instrumental albums a listen or two and move on, I'm really enjoying this. Good stuff all around!

  31. renderful

Shit my wife says about this album: "this is like sitting around listening to classical music"

  32. Duke Fame

@renderful: So does she dig it? I have never, never, understood why IDM only appeals to dudes, unless your stage name is Mira Calix. Everything I like seems to be a vagina deflector shield, double-front. (Does that explain it?)

  33. Chris Randall

My wife, who has put up with more-or-less continual Autechre play since the mid 90s, finally heard a track (on Chiastic Slide) that she pronounced as "not as bad as the rest." That's the nicest thing she's ever said about any IDM track. Most of the time it's all "WHAT. THE. FUCK. Is this you're listening to? And how fast can you make it stop?"

    -CR

  34. renderful

@Duke Fame, yes her comment was meant as a compliment. She really digs it, but used to call 99% of IDM "pots and pans".

  35. renderful

and by "used to", I mean "every album that came before this one"

  36. bongo_x

My wife calls every possible type of electronic music "Dance Party Music".

    Aphex Twin = DPM.

No singing = Only theoretically music, not really something that should be listened to.

No heartfelt lyrics = Bad music.

    bb

  37. theoryzero

My wife poking her head into my office when Autechre is playing: "Sounds like your CD player is broken...".

  38. chaircrusher

I'd go for the cover art on a T Shirt. For that matter, I'd love a refresh on the Delia Derbyshire shirt, as my wife stole it from me.

  39. metaphysician

my wife likes what i do in the beat-oriented realm though she gets tired of hearing pieces i'm working on played over and over. she doesn't like the avant stuff but then that's because the rest of the time i'm scraping piano strings, or getting Max/MSP (and soon PD) to spit out barely sculpted chaos.

  40. metaphysician
  41. chris5s

    I'm with boobs.

  42. chris5s

Bitmud is quite nice, but my fav is Russian Corvette's Pattern Recognition

btw, i'm with chair crusher regarding the T shirt (and with boobs anyway)

  43. bongo_x

-For that matter, I'd love a refresh on the Delia Derbyshire shirt, as my wife stole it from me.-

I've just about worn mine out, hanging on for dear life.

  44. Solipsist Nation

It is difficult to express the degree of delight caused by the little "bwaaaaah" chords in the Goldbaby piece.

  45. beauty pill

The nicest thing about this about this record is how pleasurable and effortless it feels to listen to. This is something I respect profoundly.

CR, I love your piece. Love the "colors" in it. Love the splashes of electricity. I'm not quite synaesthetic --- I'm not that freaky --- but I have some neighboring tendencies.

If you ARE truly synaesthetic, I would think this album has got to be really stimulating.

  46. Chris Randall

If I was, I don't think I'd tell anyone. It seems to be a very personal... uh... thing? But thanks for the nice comments.

Ever since I stopped doing vocal-based rock, I've tried to play to the texture, not the melody. I think this track (and the last video track I did) are starting to show the very beginning of something that one could reasonably term "results" for that decade-long effort. It is essentially the same as learning a new language.

    -CR

  47. renderful

My first listen of this album was certainly a synaesthetic experience.

  48. Ghost Gum

Nice work CR - I'd be innerested in a tshirt of the cover I think as well. As soon as I saw the final print in the pic it pretty much sealed the deal as far as me buying a copy, it looks great!

  49. Grievous Auditory Harm

    Jeeezus. You sick over-achieving fuck!

OK, harsh, but allow me to explain ...

I have been listening to Micronaut for some time ...

    Callisto

    IO

    Europa

    Pasiphae

... bought them last year. The dog's bollocks. No idea how I stumbled across them.

Then, having squirreled away change for three years, like nuts up a drainpipe, I finally got a Voyager the other day. No small thing. Much justification required to quizzical spouse.

Saw a review of Phaedra in CM and so, no-brainer, modest $'s spinning to Naughty Panther.

So it goes: iPad > Phaedra > iRig > Voyager > electro-harmonix Memory Man > AD Automaton >>> Audio Mayhem ensues! Bleep, blip, blop.

    Phaedra is freakin' amazin'!

Yeah! That's right ... Audio Damage gear in there too ... Automaton is brilliant. Conway must be pleased; beats the hell out of backgammon.

Then things get a bit crazy ... stumbled across the Analog Industries site ... and that was when card services called me about "unusual activity" ...

Immediately slapped it down for ...

unsupected sounds vol. 1, a master work. The album is sick and has been on constant rotation for the last two days. Great job all concerned.

    And while there ...

    Particulate

    Location / Procedure / Experiment

    Transformer

    Study One

    Capacitor

    Resistor

Excellent. Brought to mind Autechre, which is no bad thing!

Then it dawned on me ... Sister Machine Gun, Micronaut, Audio Damage, Naughty Panther, some-time CM columnist ... This is all the same fucking guy! Son-of-a-bitch. Think I'll pack up all my toys and go suck my thumb in the corner.

Yeah a bit slow, I know.

And now, I done fucked up! Intrigued, I went to the AD website and listened to the Eos and Phosphor samples. So, in for a penny ... screw it, just bought them too. $'s spinning to AD. No buyer's regret.

    So in conclusion ...

    1. Disconnect the internet when your wife goes out.

    2. Card services should be called Card services, cf.

    3. And seriously ... Chris and Adam really great job! Truly.
