10 Answers...

From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.

That was actually quite fun to do, as it turned out. Other than glancing over the questions in Google Moderator a couple times, I didn’t do any preparation, so the answers are more-or-less totally extemporaneous. (I had to do a couple over, because I got lost in thought or digression.) Basically, I printed out the top 10 questions this morning, took a drive out to the desert, set up my Olympus OM-D E-M5, and let ’er rip. Audio was recorded on a Tascam DR-2d via a JK MIC-J 044 lav mic. (I highly recommend the latter. For the money, turned out to be pretty sweet.)

If this is something that people find interesting, I’ll be happy to do it again. I enjoyed it quite a bit. If there’s another form factor for videos you’d like to see, I’d be happy to consider those, as well.

So you are a real person after all. I always thought you were a blue robot.

You come across as a really nice person with a lot of insight.

Woah! That thing was a lot bigger than thought!

    '... the Theremin'

    ... priceless.

@brianvega: people that only know me from my snarky sniping on Twitter or whatever assume I'm some kind of raging asshole in real life, but I'm actually a pretty reasonable dude. Just ask me. I'll tell you.

I totally dug this. I'll throw my vote in for more.

Dug it. When are we getting an EP worth of that outro music? Hell, I may have to throw that in the running for next month's Q & A.

Interesting Q&A, would love to see another episode too. A small cactus you say? Damn, I want to see one of the big ones in the next video.

  8. Funkybot

Would definitely like to see more of these.

Enjoyed that, Good job! Even though my curiosity was more or less sated by the first question/answer I watched the entire thing, because, you know, cactus.

OT, are you enjoying the Oly more than your Nikon kit for video?

I'll more than likely have to break down and make some tutorial/promotional videos sooner or later.

The background was a great choice.

Nicely done, enjoyed it. Seemed like the dude on the bike repeatedly failed to take that left toin at Albuquoique.

@markteppo: In almost 30 years in this business, and thousands of songs, I've done maybe 3 tracks total in a major key, and that was one of them. Seemed appropriate, but I don't think I'll do a whole album. :-)

Very cool, thanks for doing this. I even got my question about abandoned projects answered by accident.

Yeah, I was kind of bummed your question rolled off the top 10, as I thought it was a good question, and it is the only one I actually had a prepared answer for (I had thought about it for some time on my drive to and from LA last week.) But such are the wiles of the thumbs-up button. We're all just slaves to Likes at this point.

    Love the drum machine ...

Great video! Looking forward to the upcoming Q&A. I've got a couple of questions to ask you as a sound designer. Thank you for taking the time to do this, this is invaluable information for people like me who try to break in the music industry.

At what point for you did 4 hours focus on a project become 2? I remember reading about your technique on here and find 4 hours a very productive amount of time. Is it a result of having more projects?

    Cheers

Yeah. I'm much busier now. So I actually have eschewed the 4:4:4 rule from back in the day for a 2:2:2:2:2:2:2 kind of thing. Works better for me. Keeps me focused.

This was great, thanks for doing it. Three and six were my favorites.

I really enjoyed this. Would love to see a whole load more.

I know it depends on the questions, but you do get to pick them, so it shouldn't ever be boring for you, and your unique insights into how you get things working and what you find interesting is a real treat, just as this digital world is starting to get warmed up.

Jesus. That was a 'kin horrible sentence. Like five sentences in one, but still not saying anything. Shit, I think I've just turned into Cory Doctorow.

I found the 2 hour rule thing intriguing. I sometimes spend 8 hours in a row when I'm focussed on something. I know it's not a 'good' thing, but like you say you need to be disciplined to do the 2 hour thing.

More please! This stuff is Gold.
