I’m always on the look-out for new (old) ways to make square waves, so the XGameStation really caught my ear. In a nutshell, it’s basically a learning/development platform to teach people the basics of game design, in the form of a game console about on par with, say, an Atari 5200 or thereabouts.
Now, I’m just starting to come to grips with C++, so diving in to low-level assembly code would definitely be a Bad Idea, but I’m still tempted by the desire to make something like NanoLoop for it. (BTW, NanoLoop 2.0 for GBA is coming out soon. I expect it to be quite fly.) In this day and age, where everyone has the same plug-ins and DAW, you really have to go out on a limb to come up with some unique sounds; I don’t know if learning a low-level programming language is exactly the limb I want to go out on, but…
