Killer Adam Deal…

If you pop over to the Analogue Haven used page you’ll note that they have a demo pair of Adam A7s for $850. This is an absolutely killer deal on a killer pair of speakers. If someone doesn’t jump on that, I will, even though I already have a pair.

Aww shit, I wish my buddy could pony up the money for my bm5a right now so I could get those. If you pick em up Chris, and want to sell them, I'll drive down to salem and pay you 900.

Doh! I was hoping you wouldn't mention this here (and suspected you might) before I put the money together. Time's ticking faster now..

...and they're gone. Congrats to whoever got 'em. Wasn't me. :/

I let 'em sit for almost a week! I was surprised they were up more than a couple hours, frankly.

Yeah they were there for a while, and gone within hours of you making this post. AH must love you. :)

Oh well, 1000 isnt bad anyway.

Yeah, they're worth a grand, easily. I think Adam could have got away with charging $1400 for these.

Now that I've had 'em for a while, I don't know how the fuck I ever mixed without 'em. I mean, they ain't S3As or anything, but they'll get you there, for sure.

Damn..that's only $100 more than what I paid for my Event PS8's.

Um weren't those only $150 cheaper than the retail price anyway?

Yo, do A7s trump 8030As? I know the prices are a bit different, but what do you guys think?

Personally Im not very impressed with genelecs cheaper speakers. I audiotioned them back when I got my dynaudios and thought they sounded unimpressive compared to the dyns. The more expensive genelecs definently held there own. At the moment I'm audiitioning a pair of JBL lsr3400 with the 8" sub. They soudn quite nice for my price ($750) but I wouldnt pay 1400 for a pair. The room correction hardware in the speakers barley made any difference in my room which is a bedroom/studio, thus the acoustic conditions are pretty mediocre. I think Im still pretty set on the a7 even though I havent heard a pair personally. I have heard other adams and liked them. I can't figure out how they make a 6.5" woofer hit 46hz. The 8" jbl only go to 50.

Well, before today I'd say that 8030A has a bit more crisp high end, but just on a whim, I knocked up the HF on the Adams a couple dB. (There's a little three-band EQ on the back of the Adams.)

This obviously just brought the HF up a couple dB, but it really gave them that "Adam" sound, which is so thoroughly based on the A.R.T. tweeters. When I first got them, I thought they sounded fantastic, but they really didn't sound like Adams. With that tiny bump, they sound like S3As with a more compressed low end. Obviously, they won't go near as loud, and at high volumes you can hear the amps working, but there you go.

Whether they're better than the 8030A is really a matter of taste and what you work on, generally. If forced to have an opinion, I'd say that the Genelecs would be better for classical and smoother music, but if you're doing electronics or rock, I think you'd be happier with the Adams. The A7s have much better bottom than the 8030A; the highs are very different, and that's where the matter of taste comes in. In the mids I'd say they're about the same, although the Adams are a bit bigger, and thus have a bit more knock to 'em.

Your mileage may vary. Is the 8030A $200 better than the A7? I don't think so at all. In fact, I think the Adam is a better purchase overall, taking price out of the issue. I was confident enough in the Adam name to buy the A7s unheard. I'm very happy with the purchase. Knowing what I know about Genelecs, I knew they probably weren't for me. Nothing makes me happier than a pair of Urei 813s with the light bulbs lit; if you know what I mean with that statement, you'll know what kind of sound I'm looking for in a speaker, and the Adam A7s fit me to a tee.

That is, until my wife and I buy a house, and I have a place to build in 813s. Then we'll be in business.
