MKS80 In The Hizzle...

From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.

Man, I forgot how nice these things sounded. Got my MKS80 from Analogue Haven today; minor mixup with the manual and power cord (I got the shit from a D-10. As if…) So I temporarily hard-wired the power, because the MKS uses that stupid Roland two-hole jobbie instead of an IEC cable.

That done, got it racked and rocking. I grabbed the device panel for Nuendo from this guy and we’re off to the races. All in all, a good purchase. Another thing I forgot was that it has balanced outs, like all pro gear should. An added bonus, so no nonsense required; plugged that bitch straight in to the Rosetta, and presto. I’m just happy as a fly on shit to finally have one of these. Now I just need a rack-mounted analog monosynth and I’m back up to full operating capacity from my cathartic “sell all my fucking gear” phase I went through earlier this year.

You gotta love XLR outputs on a synth.

Any ideas on the monosynth? I've been looking around for something also. I'm kind of thinking about getting one of the prepatched modular deals like the Analogue Solutions Red Square right now.

Minimoog Voyager RME, Cwejman S1 MKII, and SE ATX-Xi Quad would all be on my short list for rackmount mono.

Waldorf Pulse is supposed to sound good, DCO though. Check the Dave Smith Evolver stuff, you could go for a Poly rack and tabletop Evolver to get a 5-voice with programmer.

Dunno. If I happen across an MS10 or MS20 in the next month or two, and if the price is right, I'll probably go down that road. Otherwise, it's hard to say at this point. The RME looks tasty, as always. A Pulse is a definite option, for much cheaper. I owned an SE-1 for years, and don't care for it very much, truth be told, so I'll go ahead and rule that out, unless I see one for stupid cheap.

You could always wait for the Little Phatty no tribute edition. Oh, you wanted a rack mount? This might sound a little odd but how about the Matrix-1000? Its also DCO, but what can you get in a rack that's not digitally controlled?

There's only about 80 different options for rackmount non-DCO analogs.

That said, I _was_ waiting for the other Lil' Phatty, which I'll probably get anyways, but as soon as I finish this "Chris Randall" record (which is all acoustic instruments) I'm going to start working on a full-length Micronaut, and that will definitely occur before the non-tribute Lil' Phatty comes out.

In any case, I need to get a Rosetta 800 or Aurora 8 and an MF104Z, as I actually _need_ those things. I just _want_ another synth.

I don't know if you got the MURF yet, but running the MKS80 through it is audio vagina.

So how do you like the MKS-80, Chris? I'm getting close to splurging for one.
