Waves Of Waves...

From the original Analog Industries archive. Some links and images from that era no longer resolve.

No earth-shattering reason for posting this image, but I was sampling the alphaSyntauri today, and that thing can spit out some truly odd looking waveforms.

How did you export the graphic from the alphaSyntauri?

That's the waveform view in Cubase. I'm sampling. C/G in every octave. Yee-haw.

So, that's stereo? My initial thought is it looks like something that might be hard to get to sit right in a mix. It's cruel letting us see the picture without being able to hear the audio.

Do you do the whole single cycle thing? That's a real killer of joy.

Que? If you're asking if I loop single cycles and use Kontakt for all the synthesis chores, the answer to that is "no." You lose almost the entire character of the synth when you do that shit. A synthesizer is far more about its filters and envelopes than it is its oscillators. (Granted in this case the synth doesn't have filters, but you get my drift, I assume.)

What you see in the above image is C and G for every octave, held for the entirety of the sound. The alphaSyntauri programmers weren't especially fond of the sustain parameter, as far as I can tell. Hardly any of the sounds have a sustain step programmed. When I have to loop a sound, I actually use fairly big chunks. I don't think any of the sounds I've done so far, even the looped ones, is shorter than 3 seconds. I don't, as a matter of course, do that sort of thing. Hard drive space and RAM are cheap.
