Everything Old Is New Again…

Picked up my Airline from 12th Fret today. They did a hell of a job getting it up to modern standards, on time and under budget. New tuners, had the pots replaced, the bridge pinned, and various and sundry adjustments. Also, this might be interesting to some guitarists that read this blog: D’Addario now makes a set of 10s with a wound 3rd string especially for guitars like this. So I’m trying them out. Seem to be pretty nice, if a tiny bit lively for my taste.

The amp in the picture, if you’re curious, is an absolutely fantastic Guild Thunder I Reverb I just grabbed from Olde Towne. They wanted a bit much for it, but it sounds absolutely fantastic. Interestingly, unlike most amps with reverbs, the tank is driven with a speaker, not capacitance-coupled, like Ampeg stuff or tranny coupled like Fender. This amp was made prior to Guild’s purchase by Fender, and is smoking hot. Love it.

Anyhow, I’m trying to decide whether I want to have 12th Fret shim the pickups, as the guitar’s output is a bit low and the S:N is a bit high. It’ll change the tone drastically, so I can’t make up my mind whether to do it or not, as it sounds so good right now. But that’s where we’re living currently.
